RFC on shop=piercing (iD preset proposal)

I submitted an iD preset PR for the tags shop=piercing and piercing=yes/no:

shop=tattoo is used nearly 100x more and is sometimes used for piercing studios (even if tattoos are not available).

IMHO this is because it was not documented until recently and (therefore) is not represented as presets. IMHO it should be used much more tho!

Adding this to iD would push usage a lot, so therefore if there are any issues using this tags please voice them now.

What about a tagging proposal? We could get some community discussion about the best tags for these places first, before shoving them into iD.

Personally I’d prefer to see them under shop=beauty + beauty=*. Key:beauty - OpenStreetMap Wiki

Generally, I don’t care about the specific tag, I just want to be able to tag piercing studios in iD/Every Door easily. shop=piercing was the only documented tag in the wiki, so I believed this was a clear case ;)

and I initially suspected that it may be present with other in ;-deliminated list but it appears that this tagging is basically unused, see beauty | Keys | OpenStreetMap Taginfo

nails;massage;cosmetics;permanent_makeup;hair;piercing;skin_care is next, 3 uses worldwide

Piercing studios under shop=beauty? That is a bad fit. Piercings aren’t limited to getting your ears pierced for a pair of earrings (that could be done in a shop=beauty with piercing=yes which seems like valid tagging too). For a simpler piercing you could go to a tattoo parlour if they offer that service, but I don’t think anyone seriously considering getting a Prince AlbertÂč will be looking for beauticians; you want someone who is dedicated to setting piercings, not a goop-shilling clown wielding a piercing gun. :slight_smile:

1: Or an Apadravya, or a Christina (obviously not all of them, it kinda depends on your plumbing), or maybe just a pair of nipple piercings.

I would also tag them as shop=piercing rather than beauty (while it could be seen as kind of beauty shop it is still not how these are typically classified I believe), also shop=tattoo could work

yes, I guess it is common that they do both. If it is a piercing studio in the first place, shop=piecing is fine, i.e. shop=piercing or piercing=yes.
