Rethinking yes/no legal access tags on ways to document physical restrictions

ooking back at the original post, I see that it’s very carefully scoped to only affect ways. An odd choice, considering that access=* and other access keys are routinely tagged on all sorts of features, not only roads and paths.

Well, the wiki has a lot of catching up to do And yes, we obviously need to start somewhere. Access tags on ways are the most common (and often controversial) starting point.

The fact that a gate exists doesn’t indicate on its own that a way is not routable for any form of transport.

Are there really any physical restrictions on gates or obstacles (like locked, width, height, or smoothness) that a router cannot interpret or that could influence a particular type of navigation? There was a separate discussion earlier, but I wanted to address the highways first.
