I would like to replace the abbreviated road names of “No. n Road” to “Number n Road” in Richmond, BC, to follow the OSM best practice.
I have created this topic for discussion first instead of just changing the names in the chance they are named this way with good reason. These road names were changed in May2017 in the opposite direction that I propose. Locals use the unabbreviated name and many businesses list their address as something like “1234 Number 3 Road”. If there is a good reason to leave the names abbreviated, can something be added to the wiki?
The changes in 2017 are fairly clearly in error. They’re abbreviated on street signs, but elsewhere they’re always named in full. The mapper in question hasn’t been active since 2019, so I’d just go and fix them.
It’s a Telenav mapper, so we wouldn’t have gotten anything useful anyway.
We’ve had some trouble with Telenav mappers and road names in Toronto. I would feel free to ignore/undo their changes if anyone local disapproves of them.
That’s all the justification you need. The only good reason to leave them abbreviated would be if it’s customary to do so, like the examples in the wiki subsection.
