Hopefully it would also remove the buttons from the little popup that appears when selecting text. I donโt dislike e-mail! Itโs just that Iโm in the habit of selecting and unselecting text as I read it, and I always hit one of these buttons by accident, sending me to a different window.
The settings available are
- Share Links (twitter, facebook, email)
- Share quote visibility (one of none, anonymous, all)
- Share quote buttons (twitter, email. facebook is a disabled option)
A survey should be conducted
- Download the X/Twitter sharing tag
- Remove Facebook sharing option
- Continue with Twitter tag
- Continue with the tag on Facebook
I mean โฆ yes?
You shouldnโt remove data from OSM just because the name is from the American confederacy. But youโre under no obligation to actively map it if you donโt want to. I know someone who doesnโt map any on-street cigarette vending machines. Just leave the name
blank if you want.
What? Did you think the OSM police would come and arrest you for not adding something to OSM?
Thatโs just your, like, your opinion man.
Thereโs many people (incl. me) who view OSM as a political activity. Saying โno politics in OSMโ just doesnโt make sense.
Thatโs fine if you see it that way, but in reality not everyone does (and not everyone shares your political views, so we should be careful not to alienate mappers) and OSM works of consensus. Like I said earlier itโs a lot different to say โno one uses this feature, hereโs the data, we should remove itโ versus a vendetta against a platform because you see things you donโt like online and want to make OSM harder to share because of it. If no one is using this itโs not helping OSM, letโs remove it. But letโs not if even a small group is using it to reach the wider world about OSM.
The problem with neo-Nazis is that you canโt block it on the entire internet, which is why the discussion here, in my opinion, focuses on whether itโs being used or whether it doesnโt help anyone. [Email users Twitter] I donโt know. And now, in my opinion, itโs just a hindrance, exactly for those who want to remove the sharing option because they donโt use it or continue with it.Remove โShare on X.comโ - #24 by ืืจืฅ_ืืฉืจืื_ืืืคื_ืืืื_2025
So vote.
Actively supporting a platform which has a built-in feature to push Nazi ideology is not about โpoliticsโ, itโs about basic human dignity.
Do you think we should have a equally prominent โShare on Stormfrontโ button?
Thereโs nazi propaganda all over the internet. Should OSM go offline?
From a design perspective, it might make more sense to have the โShare on โฆโ (canโt use X as placeholder anymore ) as a personal setting, so those that have e.g. a Facebook account can enable that quick share feature.
Personally, I donโt have an account on either, so that feature is useless to me.
They are defunct and never had millions of users. Perhaps a better example would be โshould we have a Truth Social link?โ To that Iโd say yes, the more OSM can spread to the wider world, the better. The internet (especially social media) can be a dark and scary place, full of horrible content, that shouldnโt stop us from sharing the OSM project as widely and easily as possible.
Thatโs what I said,
Iโm just saying that the claim is different because no one uses it.
True, if truly no one uses this feature (Iโm not sure if/how we tell that) then yes itโs just interface clutter. But our reason we can all agree on is that itโs technical clutter not that we all somehow came to a consensus on politics. Heck, we canโt come to a consensus on a lot of things much, much smaller than politics!
I say as a compromise we will do this. Those who want to not see the sharing option on Twitter will be able to set this in their settings and vice versa.
- In favor of customization
- Against customization option
Iโm not sure if this is technically feasible. That may be a limiting factor of Discourse as a platform. Maybe @pnorman would know!
There is a technical team for that.
Vote based on what it looks like right now, everyone is in favor.
