Remove โ€Share on X.comโ€

Hopefully it would also remove the buttons from the little popup that appears when selecting text. I donโ€™t dislike e-mail! Itโ€™s just that Iโ€™m in the habit of selecting and unselecting text as I read it, and I always hit one of these buttons by accident, sending me to a different window. :boom:

I mean โ€ฆ yes?

You shouldnโ€™t remove data from OSM just because the name is from the American confederacy. But youโ€™re under no obligation to actively map it if you donโ€™t want to. I know someone who doesnโ€™t map any on-street cigarette vending machines. Just leave the name blank if you want.

What? Did you think the OSM police would come and arrest you for not adding something to OSM?

Thatโ€™s just your, like, your opinion man.

Thereโ€™s many people (incl. me) who view OSM as a political activity. Saying โ€œno politics in OSMโ€ just doesnโ€™t make sense. :slightly_smiling_face:

Thatโ€™s fine if you see it that way, but in reality not everyone does (and not everyone shares your political views, so we should be careful not to alienate mappers) and OSM works of consensus. Like I said earlier itโ€™s a lot different to say โ€œno one uses this feature, hereโ€™s the data, we should remove itโ€ versus a vendetta against a platform because you see things you donโ€™t like online and want to make OSM harder to share because of it. If no one is using this itโ€™s not helping OSM, letโ€™s remove it. But letโ€™s not if even a small group is using it to reach the wider world about OSM.

The problem with neo-Nazis is that you canโ€™t block it on the entire internet, which is why the discussion here, in my opinion, focuses on whether itโ€™s being used or whether it doesnโ€™t help anyone. [Email users Twitter] I donโ€™t know. And now, in my opinion, itโ€™s just a hindrance, exactly for those who want to remove the sharing option because they donโ€™t use it or continue with it.Remove โ€Share on X.comโ€ - #24 by ืืจืฅ_ื™ืฉืจืืœ_ื”ื™ืคื”_ืžืื•ื“_2025
So vote.

Actively supporting a platform which has a built-in feature to push Nazi ideology is not about โ€œpoliticsโ€, itโ€™s about basic human dignity.

Do you think we should have a equally prominent โ€œShare on Stormfrontโ€ button?

Thereโ€™s nazi propaganda all over the internet. Should OSM go offline?

From a design perspective, it might make more sense to have the โ€œShare on โ€ฆโ€ (canโ€™t use X as placeholder anymore :frowning: ) as a personal setting, so those that have e.g. a Facebook account can enable that quick share feature.

Personally, I donโ€™t have an account on either, so that feature is useless to me.

They are defunct and never had millions of users. Perhaps a better example would be โ€œshould we have a Truth Social link?โ€ To that Iโ€™d say yes, the more OSM can spread to the wider world, the better. The internet (especially social media) can be a dark and scary place, full of horrible content, that shouldnโ€™t stop us from sharing the OSM project as widely and easily as possible.

Thatโ€™s what I said,

Iโ€™m just saying that the claim is different because no one uses it.

True, if truly no one uses this feature (Iโ€™m not sure if/how we tell that) then yes itโ€™s just interface clutter. But our reason we can all agree on is that itโ€™s technical clutter not that we all somehow came to a consensus on politics. Heck, we canโ€™t come to a consensus on a lot of things much, much smaller than politics!

I say as a compromise we will do this. Those who want to not see the sharing option on Twitter will be able to set this in their settings and vice versa.

Iโ€™m not sure if this is technically feasible. That may be a limiting factor of Discourse as a platform. Maybe @pnorman would know!

There is a technical team for that.

Vote based on what it looks like right now, everyone is in favor.
