I had seen the Cartes app, and immediately l liked its interface. I had downloaded it even. However, the administrative boundaries have not been labelled properly over there. Also, l had been informed that it’s under development. Is it ready to be downloaded now ?
what Cartes app?
I’m definitely a fan of Cartes.app, it’s one of my favorite alternatives to Google. I’m just hoping we get a subscription option for the U.S. soon so I can use it for quick lookups with aerial/satellite imagery like I used to. The developer is on here as well (looks like you just tagged them).
The app sources a lot of their data directly from OSM as well as from a few other sources.
Are you looking to update the boundaries on OSM so that those changes get reflected in Cartes?
If you have made any recent edits to the boundaries, it usually takes a week or two for the Dev to pull in those updates.
It’s currently a web app, so “installing” it is just a matter of visiting the site in your browser, going to the settings and then “installing” the web app. There isn’t something to download through any sort of app store at the moment. The benefit to this is that it makes it easy to send links to friends without them needing to install anything.
I haven’t used it yet. In order to use it, l need to log into the website, is that what you say ?
You don’t need to log in to Cartes.app unless you’re trying to make edits, leave reviews, or view satellite imagery.
What about the administrative boundaries are labelled improperly?
Is this regarding a disputed territory?
You can read more about them here: Disputed Territories
Yes sure ! We’ve been working on it but were hit this weekend by a DDoS attack that took all our (holiday) time ![]()
Here it is : #2488 - Abonnements USA, Canada, Australie, NZ - cartes/web - Codeberg.org
It’s online : 1 €/month subscription for most of the occidental world, including UE, USA, Canada, Australia and New-Zealand ![]()
No free tier ?
As far as I can see all the basic map functionality is free and the subscription is currently only for satellite imagery.
What do you want from a free tier that ia not already there?

I don’t understand your question.
I love recording tracks using OSM. I would have loved to use cartes.app for the same. Unfortunately, l live in lndia, and payment for me becomes an issue. I’m happy with organic maps so far by the way.
Sorry, India’s not listed yet. We need to evaluate the VAT and legal requirements for each country…
If you need to assess the GST in our country, then how can your app come within the category as FOSS ? You’re paying taxes to our government to market your product.
I’m sorry, what ?
You said that you need to evaluate the GST in our country to make your app available for the people of India, didn’t you ?
And what legal requirement do you need to study for each country to release your mapping app ? There are plenty of such apps in various repositories. Do each of the app makers need to understand the legal requirements for each and every country ?
For India checking whether map censorship exists or not and to which degree would be one of the first things I would check.
(see India/Pakistan border, you want to have prepared answer for that mess)
VAT was mentioned, apparently this app has paid tier. And yes, it may exist for FOSS software especially when some hosting is involved - like preparing map data for download.
It depends. Risks increase for example when you charge for your product or are otherwise exposed to given jurisdiction.
though having “A free and open map” description and paid tier gating some functionality is confusing at best
The service is already available worldwide for years. The VAT considerations are only for the paid subscribtion.
Ideally as said by @Mateusz_Konieczny we’d inspect the legal aspects of each country. But it’s impossible without millions, so it’s available.

We just cannot provide this service for free as in money. We’d need to be a foundation with tens of thousands of €, which just moves the debate of “who pays”. Could be a national public service, but we didn’t manage to convince. We think the user should pay, a small fee of 1 €/month, rather than imposing ads.
The code is 100 % libre under AGPL. Any one can host its version of cartes.app. It’s a few hundreds of € per month for hosting and API costs, but the main problem is its development cost of about ~ 150 000 € / year to catch up with modern maps.
You’re right for the description, I just changed “free” for “libre” (translation from French will follow in the next days).
