You can try to read through the “conversation” first. The fundamental disagreement is about public passenger area vs much larger and restricted rail operations area vs linear referencing point. The centroid/label/target for rendering and routing comes afterward.
=train_station only covers buildings, causing public_transport=station to be discussed as its own area enclosing the grounds and parts outside (and exposed platforms). =stop doesn’t work for linear referencing at bay platform terminus stations, which were preferred by proponents to be a point at the end of the platforms.
