Question: Looking for some answers regarding public transport in Bulgarian OSM

As I said in the topic, just looking for someone with some general knowledge. Status, coverage, and quality of pt stops for example.

Did you mean to send it in the Bulgarian category? If you did mean, I can give you information but it would be good to know about which region we are talking about (or specific cities).

Yes, I did mean to ask the Bulgarian category. I’m just trying to get a general sense of how much work has been done in OSM in regard to PT data for the whole country. I would expect that some regions have more data and better data than others.

I already recognize your username @Dimitar155 from some stops

Could you tell me about the approximate state of:

  • Railways and their stops
  • Tramways and their stops
  • Coach lines and their stops
  • Bus lines and their stops

If they are nationally complete, or which regions, or cities are complete?

All railways are mapped including halt stops. Railway routes are completely mapped, mapped train routes can be counted on one hand.

Tramways are present only in Sofia and they are completely mapped (stops and routes).

As far as I know coach lines are not mapped (except for Flixbus international routes which happen to pass through Bulgaria). Most major cities have their bus stations mapped although they may be missing the amenity=bus_station tag. I don’t think that there is a point in mapping them now since they will be overhauled in the (hopefully) near future.

Sofia: (Almost) all bus stops are mapped, there are a few new lines which are not mapped yet. The trolleybuses are up to date.

Plovdiv: The current data is very outdated, I’m slowly working on updating it.

Varna: Looks complete and up to date to me, @plamen can tell you more.

Haskovo: Should be completely mapped.

Burgas: seems to have most stops, lines are missing

Dobrich: stops are mapped, waiting for the new transport scheme.

Ruse: Looks fine at first glance, most likely needs to be checked and updated where needed.

Veliko Tarnovo: Looks fine at first glance, may be slightly outdated.

Gabrovo: Most stops are mapped, lines are not mapped.

Stara Zagora: Seems to be up to date, needs some fixes on some routes.

Kazanak, Sliven, Karlovo, Pleven: Some stops are mapped, can’t see any mapped routes.

Vidin, Vratsa and Montana: Nothing is mapped

Pleven: Should be up to date, newer lines may be missing.

There are definitely at least a dozen more cities which have their own bus network but I don’t know them of the top of my head but most likely they don’t have many mapped routes or stops.

Overall: some bigger cities are ok, others need some verifying, most need considerable updating/adding of information.

Hello @dimitar155, as part of a project I work on I’m really interested in the topic as well. I’m completely new to OSM…is there any chance that we can comment outside of OSM?@Wulfmorn thank you for starting the topic!

Hello @BulgariaPT and welcome to OSM. I prefer to keep all OSM related communication in OSM. You can ask me here or in a private message on openstreetmap.org.

PT consists only of buses in Varna. Presently 50% of the routes are mapped as relations in OSM.
Most of the bus stops are mapped.

This is a very strange name tag: name:1999-05-19--=Балкан

This bus stop has subway=yes

Thanks for finding these issues! Both are now fixed.

I’m looking for inconsistencies in the bus stops. I found some … (lots)

There are 186 stops where name:bl is a copy of name. Its these ones.

A similar case here, where name:ru is identical to name. Fortunatley just 2:

Кукери
Нишикли

Then there are 7 stops which seems to be the name of a bus line rather than a stop:

Koprivshitza - Plovdiv
Koprivshitza-Plovdiv
Koprivshitza-Plovdiv
Koprivshitza-Plovdiv
Koprivshitza-Plovdiv
Koprivshitza-Plovdiv
Koprivshitza-Plovdiv

These are for some reason in apostrophes:

“Рибарски Площад”
“Св. Св. Кирил и Методий”
“Фиш-Фиш”
“Фиш-Фиш”

These stops are written in latin alphabet. About half of them have Bulgarian names, and the same half also have name:en cloned from name:

Arda
Cacao Beach
Cacao Beach
Emona
Fort Noks
Helena
Hotel Sky
Intsaraky
Borovets BUS center
DSK BANK
Happy Bar | Sofia-Thessaloniki
Kuban

These stops are in latin, and lowercased:

bezden bogiovci
bezden bogiovci peturch
bogiovci petarch

And these names, in latin alphabet are not names at all, just words or names of other things:

Magura (tourist train)
Bus Stop
Bus Stop
Bus Stop
Bus stop
Flixbus

I also looked at name:en and found some weird stuff.

These are just descriptions, not names:

bus to Sapareva Banya (every 30-60 minutes)
Bus to Sunny Beach and Nessebar stops here every 40 minutes
Bus to Veliko Tarnovo
Tourist Mini Train (Nessebar)
Tourist Mini Train (Nessebar)

These stop names contain references to bus lines (should be relations):

International names that are unlikely to be real

Probably transliterations sporadically introduced in tiny numbers from various languages:

Ônibus para Veliko Tarnovo (name:pt)
Zastávka Burgas (name:sk)
Delfinárium (name:cs)
Katedrála (name:cs)
Zlaté Písky, Republika (name:cs)

Magasin Monsieur Bricolage (name:fr)
rue Jean de Lafontaine (name:fr)
Sankt Konstantin und Helena (name:de)
Stefan Stambolovo (name:de)
ul. Louis Eyer (name:de)

There are also 31 Romanian names.

There are also 2331 cases of int_name which seem to be latin script names. Very likely most of the 432 name:en names should be int_name.

I guess thats enough for this report :heart_decoration: Enjoy

@Wulfmorn Could you send the overpass queries for those (assuming you used Overpass for them)?

No, I just overpassed all bus stops from Bulgaria and worked on them in Excel. You can probably overpass them with highway=bus_stop + <tag>

Sorry, I didn’t include anything more sensible to look them up with. I didn’t initially intend to make such a long list of things, but, hopefully, it will do some good. We can speak more about this on Monday, of course.

Some clarifications:

I assume that should be name:bg? This is the accepted practice for names in Bulgaria: they should have name=*, name:bg=* (both in Bulgarian Cyrillic), int_name=* (transliterated name) and optionally name:en=*. See https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Multilingual_names#Bulgaria and https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Multilingual_names#Repeating_name_with_language_specific_tag

These are descriptive names that might better be removed. Note that many bus stops don’t have a formal name, so “the Plovdiv stop” may be a valid name for a bus stop in Koprivshtitsa because that’s what people call it.

This is how names are usually written in Bulgarian, but the OSM community here has decided not to use quotes. The quote marks can be deleted.

Probably added by foreigners. name: should be in Bulgarian, so if they have name:bg, that can be copy-pasted into name: The latin script names can be moved into int_name if they are transliterations, and into name:en if they are in English.

Casing can be corrected. Note that English usually uses Title Case, while Bulgarian uses Sentence case for names (except person names). So name=Стара планина int_name=Stara planina but name=Иван Вазов int_name=Ivan Vazov

Descriptive names can be deleted. There was a lot of tagging for the renderer in Bulgaria in the past…

There is a tag for the bus lines if the relations are not there yet - route_ref (Key:route_ref - OpenStreetMap Wiki). Otherwise a description=bus line towards Plovdiv would be better than nothing.

@rhhs Regarding this

I assume that should be name:bg ? This is the accepted practice for names in Bulgaria: they should have name=* , name:bg=* (both in Bulgarian Cyrillic), int_name=* (transliterated name) and optionally name:en=* . See Multilingual names - OpenStreetMap Wiki and Multilingual names - OpenStreetMap Wiki

I think that duplicating the name:bg tag at name will be a source of mismatches and errors, and yes I meant bg not bl :). The name tag should be the local name, in the local language and script. Duplication means complication.

Its also a good idea if the int_name is only transliterations to latin script. So, letter by letter. Translations to name:en work best for places like “Cathedral” or “train station”, but not necessary for general places like town names.

The reason for duplication is explained in the link I gave earlier: Multilingual names - OpenStreetMap Wiki In most cases mappers will copy-paste the name from name to name:bg so I guess differences are rare. StreetComplete, for instance, automatically adds the entered name to both name and name:bg.

Letter-by-letter transliteration from Bulgarian Cyrillic to latin script is not possible: it has 30 letters, so some letters can only be transliterated using 2 latin letters. We use the official transliteration by the Bulgarian government, see Romanization of Bulgarian - Wikipedia Other languages using the Cyrillic script have their own transliteration rules. So name=Варна is transliterated int_name=Varna but is written in German like name:de=Warna. To make sure Bulgarian users of the map will get to see the name in their own language, name:bg=Варна is added.
