I’m posting this question because I would like to know if it would be okay to add administrative elements as a “subarea” of other administrative elements, for example, adding the 18 regions of Continental Finland(admin level 4) as subareas of the element “Mainland Finland/Manner-Suomi”(admin level 3).
I’m asking also because I noticed there is no information about it on Finland’s OSM data and I know some OSM communities consider the “subarea” information redundant/unnecessary, but I think it could be useful if you use a lot of OSM administrative data.
I’ve already added some “subarea” tags(Mainland Finland/Central Finland/Åland) but I can remove them, if it is a problem.
@MrSledge In my personal opinion I see that in the case of subareas/submembers, the positives outweight the negatives. The positives being easy navigation up and down the hierarchy chain, the only negative that came to my mind is the members list being slightly longer. I noticed you started to work on this and see it as a positive development.
I have added neighbourhoods as a submembers in Helsinki and also the more complex capital region bike network as a super relation consisting of normal relation. That have been to myself very helpful and time saving.
Concerning the hierarchy, if its not obvious, there might need to be discussion about it. If there is a will and reasons to ignore some administrative level.

I’ve now finished mapping the administrative hierarchy of Finland’s relations based on the OSM data available to me. Since Finland has a fairly straightforward tree of relations, my main goal was to facilitate easier navigation through the administrative levels.
Thank you also for providing the links to the relevant discussions, I’ll be sure to follow them (even with the help of a translator!) to stay up to date.

One thing I wanted to clarify regarding the member lists: my edits don’t increase or decrease the total number of elements. They simply create hierarchical links between existing ones. So, there shouldn’t be any net change in the overall number of elements, just better organization.
Also, just to note, I continued working on this while waiting for a reply, since I knew I could always revert the changes if needed.
