QE2 in Mountain View County, AB

I would like to get help regarding the repeated reclassification of a segment of QE2 in Mountain View County, AB, which has seen much repeated classification changes between motorway and trunk+expressway classification over the years. The highway section in question, a segment of QE2 from east of Didsbury up to the boundary with Red Deer County south of Bowden, which features several at-grade intersections in addition to interchanges at junctions with othe provincial highways, has been tagged trunk for years,with an expressway tag later added following its mass introduction to similar roads south of the border to indicate it is short of freeway (highway=motorway) designation by provincial standards, but I just took notice this has become tagged motorway (I just happened to travel there, headed to Banff for Christmas). The first time this section got tagged motorway was in 2019, over issues with in-car navigation not working properly when they’re on the QE2 segment in question. I would like to see any input from Calgary Region and southern central AB mappers in this case.

Ostensibly the reason why it’s been tagged trunk instead of motorway is because it still has at-grade intersections with Township Roads 310, 320, 322, 334, and 340 (the county line between RDC & MVC). By that reasoning I don’t see why it shouldn’t be trunk, personally.

Complaints about navigation issues seem to be more about problems with that software, not the map data. Tagging it as motorway because of that is pure “tagging for the renderer”.

It shouldn’t matter either way. Nav apps shouldn’t be “penalizing” the route because of being trunk; it’s the only north-south highway tagged higher than primary between Fort Macleod and Edmonton anyway.

I already commented on the edit involved ( Changeset: 174967240 | OpenStreetMap ) which also included several unrelated edits to playground zones somewhere near Red Deer, and encouraged them to respond to the concerns raised here.

PS: Editor involved is a newbie with only three edits, but hasn’t been active since then, so I think they’re unlikely to respond. I’m considering reverting the changes.

I already reverted the classification changes. Also moved the transition point from motorway to trunk several hundred metres north and south of the TR 310 and TR 340 intersections respectively, to include segments including turning and merging lanes: Changeset: 176416250 | OpenStreetMap
