Proposed import of Westchester NY Buildings Dataset

Proposed import of Westchester NY Buildings Dataset

Hello everyone, I am proposing to import the building dataset, sourced from Westchester Ny GIS departmemt…

Documentation

This is the wiki page for my import:
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/New_York_(state)/westchester_county_building_import

This is the source dataset’s website:

The original data download is available here:

This is a file I have prepared which shows the data after it was translated to OSM schema:

License

I have checked that this data is compatible with the ODbL.
This data is distributed under Open Data

I checked in with the Westchester GIS Department and all data is provided as is, and can be used.

Email from Westchester County GIS Department from Courtney Wieber Wieber, Courtney

Hello Andrew, Thank you for your inquiry. The statement/license on the wiki source page is still valid. Our data is available on our website for free to use/download and we still ask to be given credit. Disclaimer is also the same/valid. Our website: Westchester County GIS

Abstract

  • The dataset is provided by the westchester gis Department.
  • No direct relationship to the dataset, except that i noticed the county is missing a lot of information.
  • This data set is all the structures in westchester county. The data includes the tax codes of the buildings, which was used to determine what kind of structure it is, and linked to the tags in OSM where possible
  • I will be using task manager, and JOSM to import that data.
  • The data was converted into the standard OSM building tags using Qgis. was able to add the zip-code by using the zip-code boundaries data, and cleaned up the street address data by extracting the house number where possible, making everything title case, and expanding the suffixes where possible.
  • Any existing buildings will be compared to the official data. I will keep which ever dataset has better detail and merge any additional information this dataset may have, or the existing dataset may have.

Thanks in advance everyone!

I had a few ideas for addr: tagging and validation during import that I posted in another thread. They may also interest you. Good luck with things!

Hi Canyon Runner, happy to see you’re moving forward!

From New York (state)/westchester county building import - OpenStreetMap Wiki, the current proposed tag list for an imported building is:

building yes
height 11 In Feet. This seems to be calculated between actual elevation and building elevation.
addr:street SHELLEY AVE
addr:housenumber 25
addr:city Mount Pleasant
addr:country US
source:geometry:ref WestchesterGIS-BI-171261 WestchersterGIS-BI(BuildingImport)-[OBJECTID]
import yes
source:date 2023 Latest update date of the source geometry provided by Westchester County
source:license Open Data
import:page New York (state)/westchester county building import
source Westchester GIS

It would be great to have fewer tags per building. Anything that refers to the whole import – import=yes, source, source:license, and import:page – can go on the changeset tags and/or in the changeset comments but doesn’t need to be on each building. In the same spirit of brevity I’d skip adding addr:country=US to the matched addresses.

height without a unit in the tag value will be assumed to be meters; use eg height=11' to indicate feet.

source:date is a little ambiguous – if this is going to be each building’s PHOTO_DATE value, source:geometry:date would indicate that it’s the date that matches the particular source:geometry:ref tag.

And I still don’t see an account for westchester_building_import :slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks for the tips Jmapb

  • height i converted everything to meters. I will add this to the wiki page to make it clear for any future users. I can also remove the US code, if its redundant.

  • source:date i kept it as a reference to the original geometry date, but honestly, since we will be reviewing everything manually, and making changes here and there, that data might not be as useful long term.

  • For the tags, to confirm, i could use something like this as the comment per upload?

Import = yes
source = Westchester GIS
source:license = Open Data
import:page = https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/New_York_(state)/westchester_county_building_import

as for the account, i updated the wiki, the account is Westchester_Building_Import | OpenStreetMap :sweat_smile: . Did not realize capitalization makes it a different user!
