Proposal to rename and standardise VIC PT tagging

Bus stops are infrastructure. See post from Michael C above.

What do you mean?

My Changeset complies with everything Michael has posted here.

You said:

“Most bus stops do not have a network tag, not quite sure what to do with them yet. Please comment here if you have any ideas“

Not all bus stops are Transport Victoria bus stops. School or other independent bus networks not managed by the government should not get transport Victoria tags. Unfortunately the vast majority of bus stops do not have any tags Indicating if they are government or not.

Should bus stops have a network=* tag, based on the routes that stop there? Or should this always be left out and instead rely on the route relations to determine which networks use the stop?

I’m thinking that if the bus stop has branding to indicate it’s part of a particular network, it should get the network tag for that branding.

The Melbourne stops all have somewhat consistent branding always with both operator and the PTV logo (which will be replaced with Tvic over time I assume)

I think then they can have the network tag added, but keen to here @donmac703 and others thoughts.

I can’t comment on Melbourne, but at least from what I know in Sydney, there are all kinds of bus routes that aren’t part of the main public transport busses, some might re-use the state transit bus stops, others don’t have any marked “bus stop” and just stop like a taxi, but some would have their own distinct bus stops from the state transit ones.

  • Local routes run by the council
  • Routes run by the casino (not sure if this still runs)
  • Private school routes
  • Shuttles run by large corporations to their offices
  • Shuttles in national parks etc.
  • Shuttles run by retirement villages to help residents get to the shops
  • Airport shuttles between terminals
  • Airport busses to the city
  • Private coach services between regional cities

So it shouldn’t be a mass change to any highway=bus_stop.

We also have many private routes here, I will not be adding the tvic tags to all bus stops automatically because of this. A possible way of applying the tag would be to add it to all bus stops in tvic route relations but I don’t know how to do this yet, I might look into it later tho after I replace the tags on bus route relations.

You can find the bus stops that Transport Victoria “claims”, by looking at the gtfs data, as the gtfs data defines the set of routes and the set of platforms/stops used by that route.

If it is not in the set of platforms/stops, it is likely to be disused (probably by Transport Victoria) or used by some other entity (aka network).

Note that I refer to both platforms and stops (and, yes, bus routes have platforms!)

Note also that some of the items in Andrew’s bulleted lists will likely use “official” Transport Victoria stops, as well as have some of their own. We don’t want to get into the business of adding multiple semicolon separated networks to bus stops. If you want to know what “bus networks” use a stop, look at the networks of the routes that stop there.

The PTNA tooling (PTNA Results for Australia) now shows how incomplete/inaccurate the current VIC PT data in OSM actually is. The data for QLD and NSW is in far better shape.

Trains/trams/buses all need work (both metro and regional).

Some use the wrong roads, many are missing in OSM, some don’t stop at the correct stops (and the stops don’t exist), some are in OSM but don’t exist in reality anymore. Plenty of work.

Hi all, it’s good to see more people joining in to make public transport tagging in Victoria more consistent.

You changed the network tag for bus stops. I think to be even more consistent, the network tags from corresponding public_transport=stop_position nodes for buses would need to be renamed too.

You also changed SkyBus bus stops to network=Transport Victoria (example: Node: ‪SkyBus Stop 3 Elsternwick Station‬ (‪12920763085‬) | OpenStreetMap). However, SkyBus is a special case. It may be part of the data that PTV/Transport Victoria provides, but it is not integrated in the ticketing system or myki. Also, bus stop signage for SkyBus has it’s own design that it different from PTV/Transport Victoria signage. Furthermore, SkyBus bus stops don’t show the unique bus stop ID that is shown on every other PTV/Transport Victoria bus stop. Therefore, I think it would be better to revert that change and keep SkyBus as a separate network.

Thanks for your help and interested in your thoughts.

I agree, based on the different branding of the busses, stops and fare I see it as it’s own network.
