My name is Sean Adkins, I am a Trails Planner at M-NCPPC Prince George’s County (Maryland) Parks and Recreation. I am responsible for generating and maintaining our park trail layer on PGAtlas | Park_Trail_Ln GDB
Our staff does not have the capacity or technical prowess to overhaul OSM to accurately reflect our trails.
I am here to encourage this community to help us out. We are an extremely diverse and unique community, and companies like Google and AllTrails consistently overlook equitable digital representation in our jurisdiction.
Any assistance this group can provide is welcome. Please contact me with any questions on concerns; I will do my best to check in on this thread at least once a week.
Hi Sean, thanks for reaching out, I’m sure someone in the community would be excited to help out with this. One thing that would really help folks on here would be if you could release your trail data with explicit legal permission to use in OSM.
Hi Sean, do you have any specific things that you’d encourage folks to look at in OSM? Missing trails, poorly tagged trails, specific parks where the data is particularly bad or out of date, or anything like that? I think letting us know where you see the data falling short will help mappers, who always have a lot of things they could work on, focus their attention.
We have lots of missing trails on OSM; hopefully I can help guide folks.
Geographically, I recommend contributors start in these two locations:
Black Branch Trail, Upper Marlboro MD:(OpenStreetMap) We have a major public trail called Black Branch Trail traversing (generally) from Whiteholm Drive southeasterly across Church Road and ending along Turner Wooton Parkway.
Folly Branch Trail, Glenn Dale MD:
(OpenStreetMap)
We have a major public trail called Folly Branch Trail paralleling (roughly) Forbes Boulevard.
All efforts are massively appreciated by our organization and community at large.
