As a newcomer, I wish to know whether it is allowed by the rules to edit a map from OpenStreetMap and thereafter post it in social media.
I have a special interest in history, and for a forum on that topic, I would like to post a map with my relevant edits to illustrate the geographic aspects.
Thank you for advising me!
Yours Sincerely
H Mononen
As long as you attribute OSM with Map data © OpenStreetMap then it should be fine. See the Attribution Guidelines if you want more detail.
BTW if by “edit” you mean “edit the source map data with an editor” then make sure you’re only adding real-world features and not any personal illustrations. If you just meant “annotating a JPEG of the map” though then it’s all fine :)
You can also annotate a map created on an uMap server.
Are you aware of https://www.openhistoricalmap.org?
Thank you so much for your prompt answer and clear instructions!
Indeed, I mean annotating a JPEG of the map.
Yours,
HM
Thank you – I wasn’t aware of the OpenHistoricalMap, which seems to be an excellent resource.
By briefly testing it, I noticed the linked map gives the opportunity to set the time, which will then automatically adjust state borders to correspond with the chosen date.
Brilliant!
Yours,
HM
I would like to add a related question,
How do people get the screenshot of the previous state before the edits? Apart from obviously taking it beforehand, is it possible to see how was the state of the map at a specific date?
I found https://beforeafter.baato.io/ a number of years ago but it has so little control it’s basically useless for me. For the more technically-minded, I found this recently but I haven’t tried it yet: Jupyter Server
I have used this tool from time to time (maybe it is the one referred to in the previous post but that link didn’t seem to work for me).
That will only show changes as rendered in the standard layer at osm.org - so some kinds of change won’t be visible. It does require a bit of patience and careful following of instructions.
Edit: I’m not sure if my link works either. It may be better to go to this repository and follow the instructions to run using MyBinder. Or indeed one of the other methods if you understand them, which I don’t!
If you want OSM Carto, you could try one of the switch2osm options, and load the database with a file of the desired date from Geofabrik.
