Haven’t found a similar discussion here, pardon if there is.
In the context of, e.g. a shop that was mapped in a certain location and after years, they decide to move to a different place with the same name and everything and you find the typical “we’re moving / we’ve moved to [street bla bla]”
How do you deal with that correctly?
You drag the POI from old location to new location?
when is it too far to do so?
You mark old location as vacant, you create a new node in the new location
Context to take into account:
For example, if you drag the POI to its new location, you loose the history of what’s been existing in the original logation.
If you were to use the alternative with using a new node, you would loose for example potentially existing links like panoramax, mangroove reviews.
If shop history is important to you, one option is to set the existing location as vacant and update the new location, doing so in the same changeset. That way the history of the shop can be traced through the changeset linking the old and new locations.
Same here, I find it more useful to have continuity at the physical location than continuity of the conceptual business. I don’t think there is a single “correct” approach, but this seems to me to work better on balance.
(It’s possible I have done the first by accident, if I came across an old node I thought was misplaced, and the business had actually moved a short distance).
Note that you’d usually have to update at least address tags if you move the node, and possibly other tags too. You imply that panoramax tags are something you might want to preserve, but I don’t think I would normally want to associate a shop with a photo at a different location. Even reviews of, say, a restaurant seem doubtful - what if the reviews praise the location in a shady courtyard and it has moved to a concrete shopping mall?
If I can’t move the node (e.g. because the new location is already mapped, like as a previously-vacant shop), but the old location has a lot of tags I don’t want to have to manually recreate (website, phone numbers, etc.), then I’ll use iD editor to switch to text-mode tags and copy/paste the tags all at once (then manually change the ones that need updating, like address).
