Please update and include Somalia’s newest state in the map!

Hello everyone,

I’ve noticed that Somalia appears divided on several open mapping platforms, including OpenStreetMap. Regions like the self-declared “Somaliland” are often shown as separate entities, or with different borders and labeling compared to the internationally recognized boundaries of the Federal Republic of Somalia :somalia:.

This raises a few questions for the community:

  1. Why does this happen? – Is it due to contributors’ edits, political pressure, or outdated data sources?

  2. How can we ensure maps reflect the correct, internationally recognized borders of Somalia while still showing disputed areas in a neutral and informative way?

  3. What is the official OpenStreetMap policy for handling such disputed territories?

It would be great to hear from experienced mappers, data maintainers, and anyone familiar with OSM’s neutrality guidelines on disputed borders.

Thanks in advance for your insights and guidance!
