I was yesterday removing some places in Puncak Jaya. They all had a tag “fixme=Wrong location of village or hamlet - poor quality import”. I did this because there was no matching housing or residential areas visible on any of the satellite imagery layers we have available in OSM. And as well I could not find any information about the initial import that was done in 2011.
A user pointed me on a changeset comment Changeset: 188118328 | OpenStreetMap to here to ask for advise (thank you!), so please let me know if this was the right way to proceed or not. Feel of course free to revert my work.
Sebagai informasi, node place tersebut sebenarnya merupakan hasil impor sekitar tahun 2010–2011 oleh pengguna Jeffhack, yang kemungkinan bersumber dari data BPS 2010 (Badan Pusat Statistik) pada saat itu. Seperti yang Anda temukan, tingkat akurasi lokasi dan kualitas data impor ini memang tergolong masih kurang bagus. Data lama ini tidak hanya ada di Papua, tetapi sebagian juga masih tersisa di Sulawesi, Nusa Tenggara, dan Kalimantan.
Alasan mengapa titik-titik tersebut belum dihapus adalah karena saat ini kita belum memiliki alternatif data terbuka sebagai gantinya. Oleh karena itu, konsensus komunitas Indonesia saat ini adalah tetap membiarkannya berada di dalam basis data OSM sebagai acuan sampai tersedia data yang lebih baik atau hasil verifikasi lokal langsung di lapangan.

To give you some context, those place nodes were originally imported around 2010–2011 by user Jeffhack, most likely sourced from BPS 2010 (Statistics Indonesia) data at that time. As you noted, the positional accuracy and quality of this import are generally low. This legacy data isn’t only in Papua, but parts of it still remain across Sulawesi, Nusa Tenggara, and Kalimantan.
The reason these nodes haven’t been systematically deleted is mainly due to the lack of alternative datasets to replace them yet. Because of this, the current consensus within the Indonesian community is to retain them in the database for reference until better data or local verification becomes available.
