I built PapaMap, a map of the changing tables in OpenStreetMap, coloured by whether a father can actually get to one: green for a men’s room, a unisex toilet or a dedicated changing room, red for women’s room only, grey when nobody recorded it. rjw62 invited me to plug it in the Q3 public toilets thread last week, so this is the longer version for anyone not following that one.
In the UK that is 2,718 places with a changing table, and for 2,538 of them (93%) changing_table:location is missing. The 167 green ones mostly show how far the surveying has got.
The tag is documented at Key:changing_table:location - OpenStreetMap Wiki and takes under a minute to answer while you are standing there. Every grey pin opens MapComplete with exactly that question preloaded, so you don’t need to learn any tagging first. A StreetComplete quest for it is suggested but not implemented yet (Quest: Where is the baby changing table? · Issue #6977 · streetcomplete/StreetComplete · GitHub).
Two things that changed after UK feedback:
- Tables behind a RADAR key were dropped too broadly at first. rjw62 pointed out the usual pattern here, one object with open male and female sections plus a RADAR cubicle, so the rule now only drops it when the key locks the whole place or the cubicle the table is in. 28 UK tables were affected, 13 of them wrongly.
outdooris a documented value since last week, so those tables count as reachable now too.
The map is free, open source and has no tracking. The project is documented on the wiki under Organised Editing.
