State of Charge - June 23rd, 2025
Aplogies for the delay, we will now return to your regularly scheduled programming post-SOTM.
For the week of June 15th to June 21st the Alternative Fuel Data Center has posted 30 new charging stations in the United States! All of which have been uploaded to OSM. To subscribe to these changes in OSM and to see an archive of .csv
and .geojson
files please add the RSS feed to your favorite reader. All links and files are also centrally located on the OSM Wiki as the United States AFDC Manual Sync Project.
Insights from this week
- During the conflation step with existing OSM data, there was no item(s) to conflate.
- Rivian Adventure Network continues their expansion, while these stations can charge any CCS connector vehicle, Rivian vehicles are particularly well suited for these stations (as expected.) I recently watched a YouTube video of a tour of the Rivian factory, very interesting if you’re into that kind of thing especially as they are still relatively small when compared to the giants like Ford or General Motors!
- Following last week’s update on post codes and @PeterCooperJr and I talking at SOTM US this week, I have added a “convert post codes” script to the workflow of this project. I will now run that post-conflation but before import.
- I am working on a new and improved script for these weekly updates, so hopefully less manual work in the future!
- I reached out to the AFDC to see if they could expand their connector columns to show count. An issue with how they process this currently is they give counts for “DC Fast Chargers” then “Connector Types.” This means if a station has 2 or 3 different connectors that are DC Fast, there’s no way to tell the count of each. This is common in stations with mostly CCS connectors with 1 or 2 CHAdeMO ports, or in newer stations with 50/50 NACS and CCS connectors. I got an automated response back that they cannot answer mail right now… federal government and all. I will update if/when I do hear back.
New in the Charging Station OSM world
- SOTM US was this week in Boston! I had a great time meeting everyone and talking about all things including EVs! Some great talks could very easily be applied to EV infrastructure so stay tuned on that!
- The supercharge.info import has completed its first pass. This should get mostly correct locations and all nodes tags updated. Ways and relations were not included in the first pass. If someone knows of a less-manual way to get those tags updated from nodes - please let me know! Second pass will be adjusting a few tags and removing the
source
tag following discussion post-import. Please continue to do site surveys for these stations! The import got a lot of data into OSM that was previously non-existent but nothing beats a good ole fashioned survey! - Speaking of Tesla, there is a proposal in the voting stage to deprecate the
socket:tesla_supercharger
and related keys as they are now following a standard worldwide. Please vote approve on the proposal page on the OSM Wiki. Voting ends on June 26th! - A huge thank you to @ZeLonewolf and @jleedev for helping me contribute a pull request to the Americana map to add charging stations and the icon to the map style!
- I have started to take a look at writing a script that can import basic information from the AFDC whole database. This includes stations and charge points. It’s a massive undertaking with verification but lessons learned on these last few updates will be put to practice in the big import. Look for more information to come in the coming weeks. For now, I will continue to limit my imports to these week-to-week updates of new stations.
A Special Thanks
A very special thanks is in order to literally everyone at SOTM US that talked with me about the EV projects and said such encouraging words, I am grateful to the community for being so welcoming to a newcomer like me!
