OSM Pakistan community

Category name

Pakistan

Is this a top-level category or a subcategory?

We are requesting a top-level category because Pakistan has a growing and diverse mapping community spread across multiple regions and cities, which may eventually require its own subcategories (e.g., for specific cities, languages, or mapping initiatives). A top-level category ensures visibility and accessibility for all contributors from the country

Description of its purpose and which open mapping groups it will serve

This category will serve as the central discussion and coordination space for OpenStreetMap contributors in Pakistan. It will facilitate collaboration between individuals, local mapping groups, NGOs, academic institutions, and government stakeholders involved in open mapping. It will be used for event announcements, project coordination, tagging discussions relevant to Pakistan, and community support.

Why is this new category needed instead of being hosted as part of the existing ones?

While global and regional categories exist, they do not effectively accommodate country-specific needs such as discussions in local languages, mapping conventions tailored to Pakistan, or the coordination of community efforts across the country. Having a dedicated space will allow focused engagement and community development. Also there is no official OSM space for Pakistan community which is growing day by day.

Is this a new space or does it already exist on other platforms? Where?

Its new space, old space is inactive. users: Pakistan - OpenStreetMap Community Forum

Current volume of messages on the former platforms, if any (per week/per month)

Is there a transition plan for the old platform to this new one? (please link or describe)

  • A coordinated campaign on social media to promote the forum.
  • Orientation sessions or short tutorials for existing contributors on how to use the forum.
  • A shared document with common forum use cases in Urdu and English.

(Optional) A link or list of the category specific guidelines

We will start by using the OSM Etiquette Guidelines. As the community grows, we may propose local additions to address language-specific or cultural considerations.

List the usernames of the category moderators

Gomal_Amin (myself, i am mapping guru for HOT OSM-Asia Pacific hub and can manage the category)

We can add new morderators with addition of new active members.

Thank you for taking the initiative to get this new community started!

We do generally like to see at least 3 members in a category moderator team. Do you know of any other members of the Pakistan community who might be willing to volunteer for the role?

Thank you very much for the information. I am currently reaching out to OSM pakistan members.
