OSM mapping in Malaysia ...

hi malaysian mappers. i just started cleanup, connecting and adding some stuff in pj old town area.

for road classification i read these 2 guides

i understand pedestrian, service and residential. but for bigger roads, i am still blur. can someone give malaysian examples of tertiary, secondary, primary, trunk?
are these correct…

tertiary: jalan changgai, gasing, templer, othman,
secondary:jaln klang lama, puchong

actually,it’s difficult to tell.What I do is to see how important that road is.

Motorway,trunk,primary,seconday,tertiary appears at different zoom level.

Eg,Jalan Klang Lama,it’s a little unusual to show that road when we view the whole peninsula.But it should appear when we are viewing the whole KL.So that should put it somewhere primary or secondary.

im doing centre around sec 5 jln gasing as i learn the correct steps, so any noobie errors i make will have limited damage!!

how about this for a malaysian context…

motorway: all major highways (NSE,NPE etc)
trunk: major highways joining towns (old klang road)
primary: 3 lanes or more in one direction (jln templer, persiaran kewajipan etc)
secondary: 2 lanes in one direction (jln gasing, dato abu bakar, etc)
tertiary: high traffic 1 lane roads in residential areas, usually connecting 2 major roads. (jln 9/7 which connects jln timur to jln gasing)
residential: all other 1 lane residential roads

I don’t think the number of lanes should necessarily come into it, or at least not as a major consideration. You need to judge the importance of a road in the whole network. Thinking about zoom levels is a good idea.

What about ‘unclassified’?

Also do the validation process (if you are mapping using josm). Hopefully, it eases the process of making osm malaysia routable sometime in the distant future.

The way I differentiate residential & living streets is that, residential goes through a neighborhood but residents’ cars are not parked on the sides, also used to mark roads through business areas.

I used unclassified for gravel roads (not officially maintained by anybody, usually used for short cuts between major roads).

If a road is unsealed and not official, should it not be a track?

Emmm… should be I guess. But, in my country usually the gravel road (or track) ends up paved later on, especially in the city area (hoping that it will be preferred over track by a routing software). With so very few people mapping in this region, updating the status from track to road might be slim.

I agree with the tag track, especially if it is out in the boonies like farmland etc…

Actually, there are quite a few people mapping, but they are working on MalSingMaps.com & MalFreeMaps.com.

at the traffic light, jln othman (east and west) has a divider. jln selangor (north) has a divider too. jln 1/21 (south) doesnt have any divider. how do i draw the point where jln 1/21 meets jln selangor? currently ive made the road split just before it reaches the intersection.

There’s a couple of things with that intersection:

I wouldn’t create an intersection like that, since going from East to west you’ll have one way road that goes into two way road then back to one way. Instead, I suggest make them go all the way from E to W as one way. Same in regards going from E to N. Therefore, the intersection when viewed from East West to North, there are going to be 4 connections (points of intersects) between 4 objects( Jln Othman Eastwards road & westwards road, Jln Selangor North and South).
I would do like what you did with Jln Selangor going into 1/21. Except, those y branches need to have one way arrow at left and right branch.

i’m currently working on cleaning up, connecting roads, adding pois in the bottom half of pj. ive done sections 1-6, and 51. and going on to 7-10 and 52. if anyone spots errors in these sections, please let me know. hopefully i get it right the 1st time and dont have to redo much

sure why not.

on another matter… lots of roads were drawn but not connected. after connecting them, i can see updated map on my nav app but routing sucks. some routes even join 2 dead end roads!! any ideas why?

I believe it’s because OSM previously don’t have high resolution satellite image for Malaysia.

i seen a lot of such road.If your using JOSM,you can see the history of a particular road. After awhile,you might notice the trend of error. If the road is really bad, i’ll delete and redo

Maybe try a different routing software? I would like to try routing, but perhaps shouldn’t considering the amount of crossing ways error and what not that I had corrected before

You use JOSM to test the route. It will show where the mistake are.
As for navigating,I’m using osmand but not relying on it.

My ultimate motivation is to implement traffic information using TPEGML

thanks. josm was good but it didnt sort out routing problem. most of the real errors it found were unnamed streets.

regard routing software…ive tried a few that use osm maps. all suck for navigation even in the area i fixed. sygic was good but its NOT free. anyway i dont think it uses osm maps

could someone please check this area and tell me wtf i’m doing wrong.
