For general users of the map (viewing, uploading.downloading) will the new ISP provide any noticeable improvements? (Hopefully reliability will be one).

I just want to say that I’m always impressed at what the OWG does with one full time engineer and dedicated volunteers - and especially this week. The fact that you were able to fail the site over for reads quickly so data consumers and maps around the web weren’t broken is a huge win in my book, and I hope it’s not overlooked in any postmortems.

Edit: I meant to mention how amazing I think it is that you got the site back to full functioning before the existing ISP could get their network back online.

Thank you all for your work and dedication!

Reliability should be the biggest improvement. We have additional bandwidth (Went from 2x 1Gbps bonded link to 2x 10Gbps links rate limited for now to 3Gbps), the 10Gbps links should have lower latency, along with the new ISP having better peering with different networks which should also help lower latency.

I’ve made a few edits. Everything seems smooth and possibly a bit faster. Fewer tiles being slow to load.

Just noticing that https://planet.osm.org/replication/day/000/004/478.osc.gz doesn’t go anywhere (the link is broken). The (Index of /replication/day/000/004) page it says it should be 19M, but when I click on it I get a “The specified key does not exist” error. Is that going to be updated? I see that the 479.osc.gz is fine.

Same here. It does feel faster to load tiles.

I experience the same: Tiles are loading lightning fast now.

I would like to give my experience to the topics mentioned in the above posts. Maybe it’s useful for some to learn about the behaviour:

  • While a new login was not possible, my already logged-in account stayed active all the time in iD / on the OSM website in the respective browser, no session was closed
  • Starting a new edit in a new browser tab was not possible, the website would just show an empty page with the outage message. However, if the tab was already in editing mode, one could still continue editing, there was only a banner that you needed to wait with uploading
  • Probably a bug: The OSM website still allowed to start new comments on the map including positioning for logged-in users. But the button to post it after writing was dead. Of course the server wasn’t accepting any input but potentially comments might have been lost that way, some people might have written (longer) comments and might have decided to not rewrite it again later on if it was lost from the browser

Closely connected to those points there are a few ideas one might think about:

  • There was talking about potentially lost edits from iD. I think this could happen if the browser is refreshing data in the meanwhile. It might be worth a thought to have an option to save edits to local cache for later upload in case of a device shutdown, the browser running out of RAM or crashing etc. This would not only be useful for an outage but also that one could decide to continue an unfinished edit on the next day with a peaceful mind being sure not to lose the work already done. Also no need to handle changefiles that way. The option might also be considered for map comments similarly, also see the point above.
  • Again about the map comments, the respective text input field on the OSM website might have an issue with its functional tagging. It doesn’t allow me to select the text I have written in a mobile browser and therefore it’s not possible to copy it somewhere else if the upload fails. This ads to the issue of lost comments as described in the points above.
  • Not really important but it might also be nice to have an option to view the map content with a satellite image as background during an outage while iD is not accessible. That way it would be possible to still well prepare edits while not being able to actually execute them yet. To my understanding this should work because the images are pulled from external sources.

The “old” ISP have restored their services. Our new dual ISP configuration is working, but we will keep setup on new ISP now.

iD does save your progress in the browser’s local storage. However, this storage has a finite size. (A red banner appears when you exceed the quota.) The mechanism to retrieve these stored changes can also be finicky. In some browsers, closing the tab like normal would actually cause iD to think you’ve intentionally discarded your changes, so you won’t get the option to restore them. Instead, you’d have to force-quit your browser or tab, or cause the browser or tab to crash. There are also some known issues where certain kinds of edit conflicts can cause iD to spin forever.

While it’s a good feature in general, if you can also save out an osmChange file as a backup, that would give you some peace of mind. Unfortunately, it is true that the option to review and back up your changes is gated behind a successful login session. So hopefully now that the site is back up, you can export those changes before rolling the dice on an upload.

It’s quite feasible technically, but OSM probably doesn’t have permission to show some of the major satellite imagery layers outside of an editor. As a workaround, there are standalone instances of iD and Rapid that don’t require a login until you save.

Well, that was a quick recovery. I ended up celebrating this, in a way, by taking care of some notes on Vancouver Island.
