OpenStreetMap is participating in Google Summer of Code 2025

Hey @SimonPoole,

I hope you are doing well. My name is Avinash, and I am interested in contributing to the “AI Extraction of Information from Camera-Captured Images” project under Vespucci for GSoC 2025.

To better understand the project and its functionalities, I successfully ran Vespucci locally on Android Studio. However, while attempting to run it on macOS, I encountered an issue where the application fails to open, whereas it works fine on Windows. I am unsure whether this is a macOS-specific issue or if I might have missed something in the setup. I would appreciate any guidance on diagnosing and resolving this.

I have a good background in Android Studio development and have worked on multiple projects, including Language Converter, CGPA Calculator using Jetpack Compose, QR Code Scanner, and many more. I am passionate about this project and would love to contribute to it.

Could you share any advice on how I should structure my project proposal or the key steps I need to follow for a successful GSoC application? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Just read the idea list and I find @lonvia 's idea Nominatim - Category search using ID presets really cool.

That’s something that I’ve always missed on the osm.org website: Input in the search e.g. “pharmacy” and then get results for pharmacies (close to the location currently looked at).

I’ve quickly looked into whether I could just apply for implementing this myself, but I’m not eligible as of 7.1 (a) (iv) “be a student or a beginner to open source software development.” of the program rules. So, here’s hoping someone will pick this up! :crossed_fingers:
