How do I save a location where I want the map to start the next time I open it? I seem to have done it once but I can’t seem to set it to any other location. I tried right clicking on the map and Centre Map but it still keeps going back to another location I used in the past.
Under your User name, click on
My Profile > Edit profile details > Edit location
Click the box beside “Update home location”
Position the map to where you want to be shown, than click on it, which will make the red pin move to that spot > Update profile
To test, under your User name click on “Go to home location” & you should be there!

It’s been driving me nuts try to get away from a default location that got set and I followed your instructions to set my home location which has allowed me to get to where I was working quickly. However, there is a default location which opens up which is set differently in that when I open OSM, it goes to that, now annoying, default location but I can then jump quickly to to where I’m working. A good response though and greatly appreciated.
Currently walking the Pilgrim’s Way from Winchester Cathedral to Canterbury Cathedral with my wife and we are now in the Maidstone area (Days 10, 11 and 12) but the ruddy map keeps on opening on the Titsey Estate near Oxted. It didn’t always do that. When I was working with the map in that area it somehow got set as the map opening default. One day I’ll figure it out and it will be obvious. Doh.
Thanks for the help though. It’s a big step forward.

The website openstreetmap.org stores your last map-position via cookie. So maybe deleting your browsercookie(s) might solve your problem?
You can also include the coordinates in the url when opening id editor:
https://www.openstreetmap.org/edit#background=MAPNIK&map=19/0/0
Good hint, weird default position, I doubt he is going to Null Island

It suddenly occurred to me that the opening view is also set by by any arguments after the openstreetmap call. Doh! Doh! Doh! (and I knew that from my programming days) So we both got there at about the same time but, 9_tab, all credit to you for hitting the nail on the head. This is what I had following the webpage map=16/51.27819/0.01568
(I didn’t break it. It was like that when I got here)

Many thanks for taking the time to respond. The issue was that bookmark I was using to access OSM also had the Lat and Lon in the field so no matter what I did to change my start location the URL was taking me to a fixed location. I removed the Lat/Lon reference and OSM opens up at the last place I left it as was indicated by another user. I do appreciate you coming back to me to help. You were all brilliant at responding to my call for help. I posted the answer back on the forum. Cheers!

Hi Pete, there is a workaround where is you open the map at different locations and simply store these in Google in your favourites time you click that particular favourite (or bookmarks on the desktop) it will open at least in the area that you want. I find that if I do this, then it’s just a matter of pressing the zoom button a few times

I found that I was using a URL in my favourites that had the Lat/Long stored in the string so it was overriding everything else. Removing the Lat/Lon means it now opens at the last viewed place which is what I wanted and fixed the annoying habit of going back to a previous location. I posted my findings.

Thanks, that’s also a good tip. I did the same thing on my Google homepage and stored it not as a bookmark but on the main screen works every time
