I am writing this post here because I hope to find a Cretan mapper in this community who has specific knowledge as to my question.
A few days ago I hiked as part of a small hiking group to a cave located in this area whose name was said to be ‘Metochi Pelekita’.
Actually Carto shows a cave in this area, but it is labelled as “Mougri” Cave.
Of course it is possible that there actually exist two caves; on the other hand the mapper of the Mougri cave itself admits a position uncertainty of +/- 200 metres, so “his” cave could actually be the same as “our” cave. Based on my gpx track, the distance is a good 130 metres which fits to the mentioned uncertainty.
It would be great if someone here could shed some light on this question.
I can’t answer your question. But I would like to say that the south coast of Crete has some very narrow gorges where, due to the limited visibility to the sky, GPS tracks are off by a lot more than 130 meters. For example, GPS was almost useless for me in the Sumaria Gorge.
But your target area is on the north coast where the terrain is less rugged. Maybe your GPS was good to 150 meters, but even a small gorge can reduce positional accuracy.
It is unlikely that a cave would have a name such as “Metochi” as this means something belonging to a monastery, usually a farm and supporting building - including a church.
Digging around in the web It seems that this specific name is an alternative to the (now only a) Church of the 318 Fathers somewhere around the area, belonging to the Vosakou monastery.
The cave is indeed called Mougri.
However, I’m convinced that my track is sufficiently precise because
for optimized reception of the sattelite signals I used an external antenna which was located in a special basecap offered bei Trimble for exactly this purpose and
the track shows our actual path in or along the dried-up stream bed, whereby this path naturally always runs along the lowest point of the area.
By now I have decided that there is obviously just one cave. I feel supported by this Terrabook webpage in which the altitude of the cave is given as 253 metres matching the position displayed by my track clearly better than the position which could be found in Carto until now. Of course, I’m open for funded corrections.
