Hi all, reposting a message I sent to the “Oceania" channel on discord (feel free to join the channel if you’re not already a member, there are quite a few kiwis here now)
I’d like to gather feedback on a plan to continue the import of public conservation areas from DOC (from 2024)
For background info, the import of LINZ topo data was active from 2009-2012, and 2020-present. Prior messages are on the old talk-nz mailing list.
In 2024 and early 2025, public conservation land was imported, but at the time, "stewardship areas” were excluded, because of an impending reform which would have split up these areas. They account for 10% of all boundary=protected_area.
Since there’s been no legislative progress in ~4 years, I feel like it would be better to import these and then deal with the reclassification/splitting once the government finally makes a decision…
Currently we have a weird situation where most public conservation areas are mapped, but not all.
So this is a bit of a re-annoucement that after a 10 month hiatus I’d like to continue with the “Stewardship Area”s
FAQ
- we have an ODbL license waiver for (almost) everything from the LINZ Data Service, which covers this dataset.
