Hei. Jeg bare lurer på om det har blitt gjort noe forsøk på å få en norsk panoramax server. For øyeblikket er det ingen server å laste opp bilder til, med unntak av MapComplete (med den er tilegnet bilder fra appen).

Tror dere det hadde vært mulig å overbevise Vegvesenet om å migrere Vegbilder over til Panoramax? Da ville enda flere kunne fått nytte av bilder fra Vegvesenet og nordmenn kan laste opp bilder seg :slight_smile:

Jeg tenker å samle inn masse bilder av Oslo til Panoramax :slight_smile:

@balchen Nei, men de som eier serveren må tillate at du laster opp bilder fra norge.

Ååh… så det finnes ikke noen global server for dette? Du må selv vite hvilken instans du skal gå til for å se bilder? Det står at du skal kunne se alle på panoramax.xyz, men da havner jeg bare tilbake på panoramax.fr.

The federation server (“metacatalog”) where you see images from all instances is at https://api.panoramax.xyz (“api.” at the beginning is important!)

As for the list of instances, the current list[1] is available in JSON format at https://api.panoramax.xyz/api/instances - look for field geo_coverage to find which instance allow uploading from your specific region or the whole world (there are several supporting uploads anywhere in the world, most popular being OSM-FR at https://panoramax.openstreetmap.fr/)

But while OSM-FR accepts the pictures from anywhere in the world at the moment, please note that it is not sustainable in the long run (there isn’t enough disk space), and thus they ask local communities to gather resources and build their own servers for their regions.

For example, OSM Hrvatska recently did just that (set up the Panoramax server for Croatia and neighboring ex-Yugoslavian countries). Perhaps Norway and its neighboring Nordic countries could consider doing the same for their region in the long run? (and use OSM-FR in the meantime).

I’ve also made notes and am planning to write a blog post documenting the experience at Matija Nalis's Diary | OpenStreetMap soon, so you may wish to subscribe there (no worries, I post extremely rarely :smiley: ).
I’ll also hopefully have some time left to mention it coarsely on SotM Croatia due in few days.

OSMFR accept pictures from anywhere but FOR TESTING ONLY, we can’t host the whole world on our server and it is not the design of panoramax which is decentralized and federated.

Maybe not really an answer to your question, but using Mapilio instead of Panoramax might be a possibility too.
Afaik Panoramax and Mapilio are the only European streetview services (at least Kartaview and (Meta’s) Mapillary aren’t)

TL;DR: IMHO, at least regarding EU-sovereignty perspective, Mapilio does not seem like a good match so far. Nor does it seem like a good choice for people caring about open source or those who take care in avoiding potential vendor lock-ins.

If you care about any (or all!) of those issues, Panoramax is pretty much a perfect fit.

That seems somewhat off topic, but yeah: there are Mapilio, Mapillary, KartaView and other services run by for-profit companies on proprietary software who allow their imagery to be used with OSM (in some cases at least). (there also exist few other FOSS ones, like OpenTrailView and Wikimedia Commons, each with their own acceptable imagery, which might or might not include random street imagery).

For those interested, more complete list of services allowing upload and use of Street-level imagery (which can be useful for OSM uses) can be found here.

AFAICT, none of them seem to openly provide everything that Panoramax does, though, so there are many reasons for people being interested in Panoramax specifically.

While Mapilio (the company) is indeed registered in the Europe (the continent), it is not in EU – for those who care about political boundaries and all that.

For those who don’t care about political borders (but just natural geographic ones[1]), Yandex Maps StreetView (popular Russian map provider, among other things) is registered in Europe (the continent), too. :sweat_smile:

Also, for people concerned about geolocation and political zones of control, one should be concerned not only about their HQ location, but even more so about location/control of infrastructure they use. I don’t know all the details, but at the very least it seems:

  • Mapilio ToS explicitly states that “In order for us to provide the Mapilio Services, you agree that we may process, transfer and store information about you in United Kingdom, the United States and other countries, where you may not have the same rights and protections as you do under local law.”
  • at least in my EU location, their services are being served by Cloudflare (the US company)
  • (the physical location and jurisdiction of actual datacenters used for image storage has not been publicly revealed AFAICT)

I think I maybe will just host a server myself :slight_smile: It does not seem like that much work
