Non pemanent soccer fields: but permanent field labels

I got really stuck solving this mapping problem (two problems):

Soccer park.

The soccer park has several playing fields in various sizes for different age groups. Someone drew them in years ago.

First problem: The layout is not fixed, and the pitches change every two months or so. Right now, they are wrong. Fixing them would only fix it for the current season at the most, or untill some of the pitches get moved to let the grass recover. Deleting them, also has problems: right now, at least one can see, that there are different pitches in different sizes. On the other hand, parents looking for the little fields wouldn’t expect it at the wrong spot anymore.

Second problem: What is permanent, are the field names. Starting at the top, it is field 1, 2, 3. The six fields at the Northwest are all Field 1 (1a through 1f). The field at Northeast is Field 3, (3a since there is only one).

(There are boards in the park that show the field names. Just added those.)

But club pdfs also show larger boundary boxes with permanent field names. Not visible on the ground, more administrative. The top row would have three large rectangles labeled 1, 2,3, and all pitches in these boxes would get these numbers. If 1 changes to a big field, it will be 1a, if 1 changes to two smaller fields, they will be 1a and 1b, etc…

Most helpful for finding pitches would be to add these boxes. But how to tag them? And should one get rid of the wrong pitches then? (I think so)

There is already a soccer park level.

One way: delete the wrong pitches, draw them all as larger pitches according to the permanent field layout and correct names. Pitch sizes would be wrong, but the park would still look like a soccer park and everyone could find the pitch. On arrival, parents of small kids would discover that pitch 1 is actually 4 little fields.

Second way: Add some recreation_ground rectangles between park and pitch layers. They could be tagged with the correct pitch numbers. – But wouldn’t look like soccer fields and the problem with the non permanent pitch layout still exists.

Sorry. long text. But I can’t find a perfect solution. Leaning towards using “pitch” for maximum pitch areas and deleting the small ones.

Just marking the areas as you said is probably the best, but also include either a Note or a Descriptin explaining what you’ve done, so somebody else doesn’t come along next summer & change it all again!

i’d go with Fizzie’s idea

Adding a clear note on each field area keeps things honest and stops future edits from messing it up

Thanks to both of you..

Changed it.

I named the fields, added notes, loc_ref for numbers, and also tagged some info signs that say things like “2” or “3” on them.

I used the field layout from the Parks and Rec department to draw in these (virtual) fields that can contain several seasonal pitches. The fields are now kind of “administrative borders” ;)

It doesn’t look as (“soccery” | bespoke | wholesome) as the (years out of date) seasonal pitches did, but now you can actually look where field 3 is, go there and figure out on your own whether you want field 3a or field 3b.
