Hello mdelatorre, Thank you for reaching out. I see there are many misunderstandings about our project and the goal of the project. I will respond to each item in your list and hopefully offer some clarity to what our project is aiming to achieve.
-We saw that only one person wrote that prefixes should not be included in names and that decision was not voted on or established with the community at large. We also noticed that many locals include prefixes on road names, so we decided to agree with those locals and make the names the most complete possible, which includes prefixes as they are present on the road signs themselves.
-We reached out to the local talk lists and forums before we began the project to get the opinions of the local editors in the area. This was done in September 2018. Some were concerned we would be removing current names, but if a road already has a name in OSM, we add the INEGI name as an alt name for that road. If the names are the same minus a word, accent, or prefix; we add that to the name to make it the most complete name. We do not remove or overwrite names already in OSM.
-We have conducted several ground surveys in Mexico cities such as Monterrey, Mexico City, Guadalajara, Toluca, Tijuana, Mexicali, and others. We found that the names available in INEGI match the names on the road signs physically present in these cities.
-We do not overwrite the names present in OSM. We add all names as alt names if there is already a name in OSM. We do make names already present in OSM the most complete name. This does not affect routing data, however. For example, if a road is called “Gomez” in OSM, yet in INEGI the road is called, “Calle Jorge Gomez” we add that as the most complete name. All GPS devices search for key words and phrases, so searching for “Calle Jorge Gomez” or searching for “Gomez” would lead to the same road.
-We are very active on the forum and Talk lists. We have been in active discussions with local editors on those pages discussing this very topic.
-My colleague Jorge (username JAAS) is very active of the forum and talk lists. He will also be posting a response there.
I hope this clears up the misunderstandings and misconceptions about the scope of our project. Our primary purpose is to add in missing geometry and missing names throughout Mexico. We then verify the work by physically traveling to many of these cities and checking the names on street signs with the names provided in OSM and INEGI. Thank you again for reaching out and I would be happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have. Leanne
