Hey everyone I have been using osmAnd for roughly a year now and by extension osm. I use quite a lot of open source software and have always wanted to give back but i am financially limited and I have no clue about any sort of programming. I have started adding and updating POI’s around my area and I really enjoy it.
My question relates to outdoor climbing and (outdoor) tracks on open street maps.
I would love to add tracks that are not yet on open street maps to different climbing crags as well as additionally list climbing walls on the map as well as POI’s for the crags and POI’s and tracks to individual boulders.
I have added an image here of the Grampians region in Victoria, Australia. There are the dotted tracks I am referring to, “Taipan wall” (the name of a crag similar to what I want to add for others), and one climbing POI marked on the map. There are quite extensive “climbers” tracks located here as well as further crags I would eventually like to mark on as well as individual boulders.
I’m looking for some guidance and best way to do this is Vespucci an app suitable for this task? As for the tracks am I able to record a GPX file in osmAnd as I walk to a crag and then use that to map the tracks?
I’m very new to this and even just links to readings would be excellent!
A bonus would be for the future but i suspect this platform may not be ideal for it but I would love to add individual climbing routes some way to the crags/cliffs or just main ones so people are better able to find them especially offline as there is usually not service at these locations
Recording your own GPX traces is a good way to go about it, then you can drag and drop those GPX files into OpenStreetMap and trace out the track as a line over your GPX trace. Vespucci is okay for mapping in the field, but you’ll likely find it easier to do it back on a computer using iD or JOSM.
Some mappers use the Strava heatmap Strava - OpenStreetMap Wiki but it’s difficult to get setup into the editors, and relies on existing traces there.
I have gone through the open street map editor today and tutorial and am familiarising myself with it. That definitely seems like the way to go I agree.
I have a question that is not necessarily covered in the Climbing wiki or the Australian tagging guides you have linked. I have edited a cliff line, I used the scissor tool to split it where the crag starts and then named the cliff line, while in a public sense the cliff face might not be the same name as the climbing name is it acceptable to then name it as such. The Climbing wiki get’s quite complex and I will have to add another post when I am ready to start adding individual routes to crags. It comes under a site relation with a “climbing=area” tag they are all nested within. (I am adding this part in case anyone in the future stumbles upon it but hopefully I can figure it out and there will be another post be me).
