Hi all, I recently stubbled across this data set publish by national gas on their website and DataMapWales. It contains the path of all transmission pipelines and locations of major “substations” (i don’t know gas terminology). I’m not 100% sure on the licence so wanted to double check here.
DataMapWales states that the licence is unspecified and there is no license explicitly stated on National Gas’s website however is does describe the data as “public data” . Along with the standard shape files there is also JPG close ups on each OS grid of the data. each image has this copyright statement in it but i’m unsure if this is saying its copyrighted or its all under OGL
I would not interpret that as “we are unsure”, but as a statement to mean that the data is not covered by copyright, e.g. that it is public domain or otherwise uncopyrightable (e.g. in many jurisdictions mere collection of facts, even if curated, is not copyrightable). So, “copyright is not applicable here, hence there can be no copyright license”.
But then again, they do claim copyright elsewhere, so they might be confused, yes.
Thus, as noted above, it is best to ask for clarification, just to be extra sure.
