Nation station is closed during State of the Map

As a heads up to anyone booking accommodation, Nation station will be closed during the conference. Hopefully the engineering work closing the whole line earlier in August will have finished in time.

Wow that was a near miss (the section where SOTM is located will reopen a week before the event)! We are talking here about the suburban metro (RER A) that is the most convenient way of going from Paris (or from the Disney area hotels) to the conference venue.

while I’m at it, here are tips for using public transportation here in the Paris area:

  • there are three different kinds of one-trip tickets: all metros and local trains, all buses and trams, and trips to/from airports. Yes you must pay two different tickets for a bus+metro trip.
  • you must buy a pass to put your tickets on (costs 2€) OR you can use your phone with the free Ile-de-France Mobility app. I recommend using the app at least when arriving from the airport or train station, so as to avoid long lines.
  • you can also load combined tickets on your passes or phones but I never have need for them and you’d better check the app or web site

thanks for the information!
I’ve updated the umap, and we will put this on the website with more detailled infos for local transportation

Thank you for this advice. It’s worth noting that the Mobility app also requires installation of a related ticket purchase app, and, as usual an account. Anyone travelling needs their own app, you can’t have another persons tickets on your phone. I’m just practising at the moment to try and keep things smooth later. I found this site to be useful too with respect to travel from/to the airport.

This is not 100% consistent with my own experience:

  • yes, in Paris you need one pass or one app per person travelling
  • I don’t recall having to create an account (that is, until I applied for resident fares)
  • I don’t recall anything about a secondary app
You might wish to check that you use the official Ile de France Mobilité app (or the Bonjour RATP app, RATP being the main operator of that transport network)

The second app allows for the purchase and storage of the tickets via the app. For that bit, understandably and account/email is necessary for any comms that might crop us. Ile de France moblites app? Looks like I’ve the correct app from Google.

I’m not too surprised my experience is not 100% as yours. This is my understanding so far have not used it in anger yet,

… and I’m an iPhone user, this might explain some differences. As for account/email, my memories are of providing an optional email address if I wanted a receipt. Originally, the app did not keep the address from one use to the next, which frustrated me some.

Interesting it mentions Apple Wallet but not Google Wallet.

Paris is the outlier in terms of public transport payment in that you cannot tap in and out using your bankcard.

I was just going to add the same comment re Google Wallet. I guess they’ve relied on the Apple system and then needed an add on for Google.
