I’m just new to OSM, and my first action was to give a bridge in my home town a name.
But the name cannot be seen in the map. What am I doing wrong?

Not everything that is in the db renders on the main maps. Not by a long shot. There is so much in OSM, that it won’t be a pretty or functional map if we just render everything there is.
Please don’t let that cause you to only add stuff that renders from now on. The map, however nice, is not the heart of OSM. The database is. If someone comes along and wants to render bridge names, he can, as long as people like us add the names. And I know for a fact some mappers have added bridge names for their whole city, waiting for someone to come along and use them.
