I’m new to OSM. If I trace a track/route on the map and then move a mile or two further, my whole trace will sometimes change completely, presumably because the map has found a shorter route. What’s the way round this, such as using via
Hi and welcome to OSM
Since OSM is “just” the database, you should specify which software / website you’re referring to.
If you happen to be using OsmAnd as your navigation app, you could experiment with the setting “Minimal distance to recalculate route:”
- Configure profile (e.g. Walking or whichever mode of transport you want)
- Navigation settings
- Route parameters
- Recalculate route (bottom of screen)
- Change Minimal distance to calculate route
Other apps may have similar settings, or more basic apps may not give you this level of control.
I’m new to all of this, but I’ll try to enlarge. I go to my browser, search for OSM and up it pops.
I then right click, select start from here up pops my marker, move a few miles on repeat select move to here and I get a lovely blue track showing, just great for me. If I move a few miles on, and select move to here the track may continue along my route or find a new route, I assume a shorter route which I don’t want
The demo/test routers on osm.org do not have a Via function. Moving the To-marker results in recalculation of the route. I seldom use routers online, but I’m sure many mappers can name their favorite OSM-based mapping applications with Via function and many other goodies!
The UI on osm.org has links to the original sites of all three routing engines once you’ve calculated a route (the one for valhalla seems to be broken right now though).
