MTB trail alternative route

I’m editing some MTB trails and one of them has an alternative option for the downhill.
(a split)

  1. a “technical” single trail option
  2. A road descend option

I have seen other trails like this where these alternatives are all just part of the same relation, but I found that very confusing when I saw them on the map.
Is there a better way to do this than just add all paths to the same relation?
Should I use Proposed features/Recreational route relation roles - OpenStreetMap Wiki for this?

Yes, I would create a new relation for the road variant. Then add the created relation to the main relation with role “alternative”.

Adding a child relation to a parent relation might be a difficult task in many OSM editors though. Personally, I use the Relation Toolbox plugin for JOSM.
