Missing Waterbody Label in Outer Banks, NC (Pamlico Sound?)

I’m working on mapping the Outer Banks in North Carolina and noticed that a large body of water along the coastline is not labeled in OpenStreetMap. I believe this is Pamlico Sound, but I wanted to check if there’s a reason for the missing label or if it simply needs to be added.

You can see the area in question here:

I’m not familiar with editing large geographic features like this, so I wanted to bring it to the attention of more experienced mappers who might be able to add the missing label correctly. If someone could take a look or advise on the best course of action, I’d really appreciate it!

Hi,

Pamlico Sound You can find here:

Yes, that area is labeled as Pamlico Sound. However, there is a section just north of it that is not marked or identified as a body of water.

According to GNIS[1], this waterbody is not part of Pamlico Sound. Looks like it has its own name and is called Albemarle Sound.

Edit: Albermarle Sound is mapped in OSM as a natural=baynode: Node: ‪Albemarle Sound‬ (‪10301245008‬) | OpenStreetMap.

Yes, that is the correct name. However, what I see appears to be only a tag rather than a polygon shape. As shown in the attached image, there is no polygon defining the area on the map.

Another “missing” water body between Pamlico Sound and Albemarle Sound is Croatan Sound, which is also only mapped as a node in OSM

Mapping both as polygons is an extensive task, even if you use multi-polygons and have to find all the coastlines and possibly auxiliary ways.

Mapping named areas of the ocean as polygons is also controversial because the exact bounds are indefinite. Some portion of the OSM community would say the Pamlico Sound multi-polygon should be replaced with a node.
