The advantage of doing so is that people (other than an external commercial entity) get to discuss what’s in it.
Elsewhere in OSM we’ve had people complaining about what “OSM Carto” does and doesn’t support and we have an entire wiki page about “controversial” iD editor discussions.
It’s especially important to discuss what’s in the schema here because as well as providing information to be used in a map at osm.org, there’s also the expectation that the data in these vector tiles can be used by other maps too. There needs to be a trade-off between the size of the tiles and the information that they contain, and unless people engage with that discussion I suspect that they may be disappointed.
I’ve been busy with some non-OSMF personal stuff and the OSMF Vector Tiles work hasn’t been the most visible user-facing stuff lately, but I now have the demo page using tiles served from OSMF hardware. I will post more details later, but I wanted to do a soft launch. I know there’s a few bugs still present, and those need ironing out.
