Measuring width of stairs with a ramp

Hi,
I am just referring a question from an open note. The user is likely referring to the StreetComplete measurement, which tags the “width” tag on roads if I’m correct.

Note: 5092366 | OpenStreetMap (German, translated:)
Question about width: Does one measure the whole width of the stairs or only the part with the steps? In the middle between steps and ramp there is a handrail. Width steps: 1m, width ramp: also 1m.

What I know:

  • Tagging the ramp with its intended usage probably gives enough information already, i.e. ramp:stroller=yesimplying bike and stroller, but not wheelchair.
But this does nothing about the width question.
  • Only related thread I found seems to be one from 2014 (also German), where in the end ramp:width was used: Treppe mit Rampe, wie mappe ich das? - #7 by Hakuch - but that property is still only used 67 times and I wonder if it even makes sense to apply to a split ramp like in the picture.
  • maxwidth:physical is an alternative used on barriers, for the maximum passable width, which would be limited by the handrail. Could it apply here?

You could map this as (a) ramp (b) handrail and (c) steps.

I am thinking width=1. If you think of the use cases for width, if you are escorting a 2 year old child, then 1 metre might be enough, but it won’t be enough for you with your grandmother. No matter what configuration the users are in, width>1 isn’t available to anyone, unless they are driving a tank.

Width is generally tagged as the strictest restriction along the way for the primary mode of transport. I would tag it as the width of the walking section.

Thank you both for confirming that width should be the maximum usable width.
Since StreetComplete uses this, the stairs is what should be measured in this case.

Interesting, I was unaware that one could map these features separately.
However, since that’s not a ramp that can be used with wheelchairs, I don’t think the suggested method on the ramp wiki page makes sense, i.e. mapping it as a footway.

I think I am going to just add (someone alread has) the established ramp:stroller=yes, and add ramp:width in case it ever becomes popular.
