OK, the subject seems a bit wider as I initially thought: I initially thought that only France was subject to this problem, but it seems not. I think I’ll ask in HebdOSM for descriptions of maxweight/maxweightrating usage in other countries, and for descriptions of the meaning of maxweight signs (does they mean max weight, or max permissible weight rating). Without these informations, it seems to me impossible to rationalize tags usage.
