Mapping sidewalks around Metlife Stadium so football fans can walk there for free instead of paying USD 150 for a train

As I have already said in this thread:

Google Street View is not a compatible source, and the information there can not be used to make mapping decisions.

I mean… yes, Google Streetview is not a compatible source, but if we can see that it’s there on GS, we can at least determine there is a need for someone to go out and survey.

So why not wait for someone to survey?

Adding sidewalk=no based on outdated but compatible imagery just makes it worse.

@Jarek Why the thumbs down?

Hi @balchen,

Happy to elaborate. I thumbed-down your post because I don’t find it particularly nice.

You first posted here with a fair, if somewhat unrealistic request. (Really – have you walked 4 km mostly with no shade at 41 degrees latitude in a humid climate, partly next to a highway, on a June afternoon?)

You continue claiming there might be sidewalks based on what is apparently a Street View tour, when mappers more familiar with the area tell you there are unlikely to be.

You question mappers who have actually put in the effort to add detail to the map using best available resources.

Everyone is free to add or amend information to OpenStreetMap based on either survey or acceptable sources. AntiCompositeNumber has done so. You have not. I think saying that their editing “just makes it worse” it just plain rude.

If I posted in the Norwegian community with a request to go to Trondheim and survey something I saw on Street View that I think is a poutine stand, would you do it within 12 days?

No, I wouldn’t do that. If you posted about something near to where I am, I would probably go look at it. Someone in Trondheim might do it, though.

I probably wouldn’t look at aerial photos of Trondheim taken before the StreetView photos and tag poutine_stand=no.

I also probably wouldn’t argue that no one eats poutine in Trondheim anyway, so why map it even if it’s there. :man_shrugging:

I think you picked the wrong Norwegian to ask that question. :upside_down_face: I’m happy to list my hot and humid credentials, but I think yes, I’ve done something that’s comparable. Does it matter?

These sidewalks are not made for use with thousands of people walking there in a short period. Likely these walkers are going to walk also on the carriageway, when it is very crowdy. And that is a security problem. So there will be security measures, and maybe closing down sidewalks.
