I was doing some mapping on a mountain road recently, that, several years ago, was partially swept away by a rockfall.
When it was rebuilt, they included a barrier fence above it to hopefully prevent it from happening again
Tried finding a good way to map it, but the best I could come up with was barrier=fence + fence_type=avalanche, which isn’t really right, as avalanches are made up of snow & ice, which is never going to happen here (sub-tropical Queensland, Australia)!
Suggestion was made that copying something from Tag:man_made=avalanche_protection - OpenStreetMap Wiki and Avalanche protection - OpenStreetMap Wiki may be the way to go, with man_made=rockfall_net being put forward as a possibility.
Did find a couple of previous mentions, but they don’t appear to have gone anywhere? Tags for road side rock cutouts with netcover and barrier on top to catch falling rocks
So, what do we think about man_made=rockfall_protection + rockfall_protection=*, with possible keys of =fence / barrier for situations like the photo above & File:Johnstown Rockfall 2.JPG - Wikimedia Commons
Another one would be =mesh (net?), also shown in the Commons photo, where wire-mesh, or netting, is secured to the rockface to (hopefully!) prevent any rocks from falling.
