Hi everyone,
I have a question regarding the mapping of structures like swings, sand pits or climbing frames located on a playground.
Imagine the following situation: There is small playground with a sand pit and a climbig frame. The playground is already mapped as an area with the tags as shown in the first screenshot.
I added the following tags:
Now my question: Even with playground:climbingframe=yes + playground:sandpit=yes tagged, should I also add these two structures as nodes on the playground? And if yes, are they supposed to be included in a relation for the whole playground?
Hi!
- according to the wiki, no need for a relation:
To associate the playground area leisure=playground with the playground equipment playground=*, simply draw the playground as area and add the equipment as independent objects (nodes, ways or polygons) inside.
- according to me : it is much better to draw each
playground=* equipment. Use the playground:*=* tag on the leisure=playground area only if you don’t know the exact place of the equipment on the area.
taginfo shows that there is 300k playground=* and only 10k playground:*=*. As a osm data re-user on PlayGuide app, I only use playground=* data for the equipment of an area …

That’s a good point, I also thought about the fact that common OSM-Data-using apps and services like Organic Maps, Mapy.cz (and I’m primarily mapping having these apps in mind) don’t even show these specific tags when clicking on an POI, so it’s absolutely more useful for most users to map them separately as independent nodes.
Thank you for your quick response!
Many data consumers support individual playground equipment by now to some extend. You can do some nice micromapping and don’t need a relation.
Happy mapping
