Mapping bollard fences

Wondering about the best way to map a fence made up of wooden bollards e.g. https://klinefencinggroup.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/product-timber-bollards-1.jpg

barrier=fence + fence_type=bollard

vs

barrier=bollard as a way?

Are there any real advantages (or disadvantages) one way or the other?

bollard as a way means there are bollards with space in between so you can move there if you are not too large, while barrier=fence (regardless of fence type) means you cannot usually pass where the fence is, unless you jump or climb over it (depending on fence type and height this could be easy or not)

Another idea would be to tag this as barrier=bollard_row. :wink:

The picture tells that’s what it is. Occasionally they are all interconnected by a chain too, the idea for the one near here for bikers to be stopped from entering onto the pedestrian area…Sometime more to map :O)))

Thanks all for your answers.

I went with bollards as a way & that (at least in iD) automatically tags it as a bollard_row!

Ah yes, memory lane, done that in me early mapping days, bollards mapped individually, chain link and between the bollards, nicely spaced classic streetlamps to top it off.

I would say they are more fence than bollards. The fencing company is probably only installing the just post portion of the fence. Guessing it is some type of cost saving measure since driving a lot of posts into the ground in a shot time requires equipment most don’t own. Installing some type railing is much easier. So unless all you just need to stop vehicles that are larger than motorcycles, that is not the final state of fence. Either way I
would tag it fencing:type=post because that what they are.

if you want to be precise and detailed you could tag the bollards on nodes and connect them with a barrier=chain where applicable

See my post following that comment ;O)

  1. map chain and set nodes where bollards are.
  2. Run a “child selected” search on the chain to select all the nodes, never one missed.
  3. Add bollard tags
  4. Hit distribute to get perfect spacing
  5. Position the streetlamps, the 360 on a straight pole, else direction/tilt whatnot.
  6. Forget all about it till now. :O)))
