Folks, I was quite astonished when I noticed the lack of mapping in some counties when compared to the likes of Mayo or Sligo (and others). Either of these counties would have an almost complete building mapping % (and well done to the various mappers for their efforts), but parts of Clare for instance wouldn’t have a single building mapped for multiple square kilometers!
Take Loop Head as an example - in the section from Kilkee outwards to the head there is virtually no building mapping, including in Carrigaholt, where only the church and school are mapped. We have more archeological remains mapped than homes!
Reading other posts on here it seems that Bing has importable data on building heights, and while there are quality issues with it, I’m thinking that it might be viable for an unmapped remote area such as Clare.
What are the options for looking at importing from an automated mapping system such as Bing and what experiences have there been with those datasets with dispersed buildings over denser city locations?
I rejected around 40 building as unusable in MS Rapid (due to malformed shape) and the rest I left as they were too imprecise or off.
Around 20% of the ingested buildings will need adjustment to regularise the shape further, and I’d estimate that of the total buildings in that area only about 20% were suitable for ingestion.
There may be a quality issue with the imagery used in that particular area, but I think it’s fair to say that it wasn’t worthwhile due to the rework which is required. I’d still like to test it out in another area where the image quality is better.
