Kiss_ride stopping

After asking about it on Discord, just created a page for “Kiss and Ride” drop-off locations: Key:kiss_ride - OpenStreetMap Wiki

All comments welcome!

Looks good! I have added maxstay=load-unload since there (at the K&R places I know) is not really a defined maximum time (for instance the 2 minutes that is mentioned at the wiki page). I will add the kiss_ride=yes as well in the future.

I think “Kiss and Ride” is a bit too colloquial / informal to use as the basis for an OSM tag, even if that’s what is often used in signage on the ground. I’d prefer something based on the idea that it’s parking for drop-off only, e.g. drop-off_only=yes (Presumably you generally can’t use these areas for picking up, since you don’t know in advance exactly when your passenger will arrive.)

Also, how is anybody supposed to figure out that tag in areas where the phrase isn’t used? It’s as if we had lollipop_lady instead of supervised for crossings.

If I see a sign saying “saattoliikenne” and don’t know the correct tag, I could probably find drop-off-only without too much difficulty. kiss_ride not so much.

In Austria we have “Elternhaltestellen” (parents’ stop) close to schools. Parents who bring or get their children to/from school by car should use them and not drive in front of the school building and let the children jump out in the middle of the road. Sometimes this is called kiss&go.

I guess those are quite compatable to the kiss&ride situations even if there is no “ride”. Would be great if we find a tagging that fits both.

We already have a documented and approved tagging for this: Parking for (un)loading and drop-off/pick-up are tagged restriction=loading_only. Optionally, drop-off locations can also be tagged with reason=passenger_loading_zone to explicitly indicate that they are only for picking up and dropping off passengers (see Street_parking#Reasons_for_parking_restrictions).

If you want to explicitly indicate that these areas are locally designated/signposted as “Kiss and Ride parking,” perhaps a descriptionor something similar could be added?

In the Netherlands that tag has its own traffic sign and is intended for cargo (un)loading, not passengers.

Generally, on a osm.wiki, one could use RelatedTerm template (supporting multiple languages), e.g (by using “Edit source”) adding to the bottom of the page following:

{{RelatedTermList|
  {{RelatedTerm|drop off only station}}
  {{RelatedTerm|fi|saattoliikenne}}
}}

(or other multiple tags) that would help with searching the wiki, discoverability etc.

see e.g. amenity=town for example.

(not saying that it is the ideal solution for this particular case, just mentioning it generally as something that helps discoverability)

According to the definition of the RVV there is not really a difference between (un)loading goods or passengers. Maybe sounds a bit strange, but definitely not wrong.

p.s. the one I’m talking about is signed with a E1 sign, not a E7.

Interesting detail. I certainly misinterpreted that then.

In Austria there are some no stopping except to get on or off a car. Loading is not permitted there.

This is adding another approach to the lot already existing … we now have a bunch of kiss_ride=

added to some 300 various versions of kiss_ride, kiss-ride, kiss+ride, Kiss+Ride, kiss&ride etc. etc. as values to the keys

parking_space
name
alt_name
description
note
service

and there are also another 500 parking_space=pickup + 1 parking_space=drop_off.

Did I miss any?

so we should probably create a “Kiss and Ride make your choice page” giving an overview to all these options … :wink:

AFAIK, the “parking_space” tag is generally used to identify an individual space within an amenity=parking (typically a parking=surface). For most of these kiss and ride and similar parkings, the suggested tagging would be amenity=parking with a street parking tag (e.g. parking=lane, street_side, shoulder, on_kerb, half_on_kerb, …)

=pickup can be for orders. Had been discussed before.
