Key col for the Scandinavian mountains

Hello! I hope it is OK that I’m writing in English; I don’t know Russian.

I just mapped the key col of the Scandinavian mountains, which lies in Russia, about 6 km north of Кенский волок. It is the lowest point on the watershed between the Baltic sea and the White sea: Node: 13239888402 | OpenStreetMap

I estimated the position and elevation of this col based on old soviet topographic maps, but there is something unsatisfactory about the inherent lack of precision in that, with contour lines only every 10 meters or so.

That’s why I wanted to ask you guys: what sources would you rely on, for Russian topography? Is there e.g. an open source and high quality DEM available for this part of Russia? Also, is this “col“ known and talked about in Russian sources? Does it have a name in Russian? Or is it mostly us Scandinavians that care about it, since it relates to our mountains? I say “col“ because the area is very flat, it seems, so I don’t think the col is very obvious when actually standing on it.

That’s interesting, didn’t know about prominence.

There are Roscadastre maps, but it seems they can’t be used for OSM.

Actually, prominence calulations is the reason I really care about this col. I’m trying to produce a dataset of the prominence and isolation of all mountains in Norway. Even though we have a nice 1 meter resolution DEM available for Norway (which we’re allowed to use for OSM related purposes), it turns out that isn’t enough. I also need detailed elevation data for Sweden, Finland, Russia and even Slovakia (Kriváň is the isolation parent of the highest mountain in Norway). It has turned into a bigger project than I planned for.
