I have noticed that the 2010 Constitution states that provinces were officially abolished to introduce the counties system, this came into effect in 2013 and I was wondering if we should tag provinces with boundary=historical (See Tag:boundary=historic - OpenStreetMap Wiki).
Per the Parlament of Kenya (Where they refer to the provinces as regions):
At independence, Kenya was divided into seven (7) Regions, plus the Nairobi Area. The seven Regions were Coast, Eastern, Central, Rift Valley, Nyanza, Western and North Eastern. Each Region, except the Nairobi Area, had a Regional Assembly with power to make laws. Between December 1964 and 1968, the Constitution was amended severally resulting in the abolition of Regions, and merging of the Senate and the House of Representatives.
And according to the Maarifa Centre about this change:
The colonial government established regions (Provinces) and districts that were headed by Provincial Commissioners and District Commissioners respectively (Page 9)
Based on the concerns above, the levels were reduced to two (national and county government) “following the majority’s preferences.” (Page 23)
Much of the documents I have found implying that the Provincial System was implemented by the British and that it was effectively abolished is why it is always specified that it is a “Former” administrative system.
I propose that all the boundaries of the Kenyan provinces be labeled as historical and that the counties should be the first subdivision of the country, but I need to come to a clear consensus first before proceeding with that action.
