Hi everyone! I made a small browser game that uses OSM data as its level: you enter an address, the game loads buildings (with building:levels / height), roads with names, railways, water, parks and forests around it – and a giant cat gets two minutes to destroy it.
Data comes from Nominatim and Overpass through a caching proxy (30 days) to keep the load on the public servers low. Attribution is shown in the game and on the start screen. It’s free, no account needed, no ads or tracking, and available in 9 languages.
Fun side effect: well-mapped building heights make a huge difference – tall buildings are worth more points
Happy to hear about places where something looks wrong – and thanks to everyone who maps!
@Zkir Thanks! That was exactly the idea – suddenly every building:levels tag is worth points. Skyscrapers in well-mapped cities are a real treat to stomp, while areas without height data feel noticeably flatter. Maybe it motivates someone to add a few levels to their neighbourhood.
@SomeoneElse Ha – mint green is our studio colour, so she got stuck with it. Is there a white-cat backstory I’m missing? If there’s a good story behind it, a white skin as an easter egg sounds like fun – maybe in a future skin update.
@RicoElectrico Good catch, thanks! The geocoder was hard-wired to German (my own locale ), so Obłuże became “Oblusch” and Gdynia “Gdingen”.
Fixed and live now: place names follow the game language, and street/building labels prefer name:<lang> when it’s mapped (falling back to name). Leaderboards stay shared across languages, so a Polish and a German player in Obłuże still compete in the same table. (You may need a reload to get the new version.) Let me know if you spot anything else!
@SomeoneElse Ahh – The Goodies, “Kitten Kong”! A giant white kitten stomping across London – I had no idea, but that is clearly the spiritual ancestor of this game.
Consider the white skin officially on the wishlist. For legal reasons it will of course be a completely unrelated, off-white, entirely original giant cat who has never been to London, has no idea who the Goodies are, and just happens to have a slightly suspicious interest in the Post Office Tower.
@PHerison Thanks – and great find! Firefox’s “Search for text when you start typing” grabbed the W/A/S/D keypresses before the game could use them. During a round the game now keeps its keys to itself, so the quick-find bar no longer pops up. The fix goes live in a few minutes – a reload should do it.
@SomeoneElse Update from the wishlist: there is now a white cat in KAIJUMIETZ!
Over here she’s called Schneeflocke (“Snowflake”) – an entirely original giant cat, of course, with no known connection to London or any 1970s TV show. Players who claim their name (free, just an email, no password) can pick her under “My cat” in their profile.
Small update for everyone who helped with feedback here – a few things are new in KAIJUMIETZ:
City of the week
One city per week, same map and same starting point for everyone. The OSM data for that spot is frozen for the whole week, so nobody gets a “better” part of town. Whoever is #1 on Sunday at 21:30 (Berlin time) wins a one-of-a-kind collar for their cat.
First up: Washington DC – you land on Lafayette Square, the White House is about 200 m away
Landmarks straight from the tags
Named buildings tagged as places of worship, theatres / music venues, stations, museums, castles, towers etc. (or carrying a wikidata tag) now count triple and get their own banner with a silly one-liner when they go down. So well-mapped landmarks literally pay off.
Before / after picture
After each round you can share your street before and after the cat – rendered locally in the browser, nothing is uploaded unless you share it.
Halloween (17 Oct – 2 Nov)
Pumpkins on the streets, ghosts among the pedestrians and a pumpkin collar.
https://kaijumietz.de – as always, I’m happy about feedback, especially places where the map or a landmark looks odd!
Small update: KAIJUMIETZ now has a World Tour – 20 famous places, from Times Square and the Eiffel Tower to Shibuya, the Badshahi Mosque and the Las Vegas Strip. Each city has its own star goals (how many % you need to flatten), and stars unlock the next cities.
The maps are prepared in advance from OSM data, so they load instantly. Your own address still works as before, live from OpenStreetMap.
