Join the 31 Day OSM Challenge this October!

Maptober is here! Starting today, the OpenStreetMap Foundation’s Local Chapters and Communities Working Group invites mappers everywhere to take part in the 31 Day OSM Challenge. Inspired by the #30DayMapChallenge that happens every November, this new challenge gives you a daily theme to improve OpenStreetMap, from adding trees or improving woods on Day 1 to benches, bridges, railways, healthcare, and more. Just complete the day’s task, tag your changesets with #31DayOSMChallenge and #Maptober hashtags, and share your edits on social media if you like.

There’s no pressure to map every day and you can complete the challenge at your own pace. There is no prize beyond knowing you’ve contributed to the world’s best open map. This is a great way to sharpen your skills, try new tools, and learn how to map different kinds of features. Just keep to OSM’s good practices rather than mapping only to tick a box.

Check out the full list of daily themes at the OSM Wiki and start mapping! :world_map:

This discussion thread will also serve as a general place to ask questions about the daily themes.

For day three description (fixes) it would make sense to link there Postpass/Overpass query to find those

This is all well and good but there’s no way I will be mapping things in parts of world I haven’t been to. I wouldn’t feel qualified.

This. Due to the style of the event, some of the daily themes are a call for a problem that will arise from people possibly mapping without following local conventions (similar to what happens from some MapRoulette and HOT’s Task Manager tasks).

Thank you for the suggestion! I’ve added this Postpass query (via Overpass turbo) to the description: overpass turbo

it may help to link some areas where there is high quality aerial imagery?

I tried to map in some HOT event and trying to map brown huts on brown ground, when aerial imagery has hut-sized pixels was not really doable in useful way.

On the other hand remotely mapping rivers was fairly doable for me in area with decent aerial (and no existing data, so risk of replacing current data by outdated aerial was not present). I think it was Alaska?

@seav Can you share link for openstreetmap icon assets (as in svg or png) like the one you made for 30 day osm challenge

Okay, l mapped a Gurudwara l visited on Sunday.

In two days, on October 9, the theme will be Europe. Why not map a small town in Italy? :italy:

Our October project in Italy is #PaesiniNonMappati. We have put together[1] a list of small Italian towns that still have plenty of things to map. You can use the hashtag to contribute to these statistics.

We publish two new small towns every day. This uMap contains all the towns featured so far.
