Is ATM with cash desposit ability making bank self_service=yes?

I want to bring Talk:Key:self service - OpenStreetMap Wiki to further attention as I and a different mapper have differing interpretation.

I have seen some banks with ATM inside, I seen some banks with posters encouraging people to do thing yourself in app. But I would not consider them self_service=yes and I have no idea how self_service=yes bank would work.

While some mappers think that amenity=atm cash_in=yes in bank makes it self_service=yes

I am interested which option, if any, is supported by community consensus.

  • amenity=atm cash_in=yes in bank makes it self_service=yes
  • there is no such thing as self service bank
  • bank can be self_service=yes but something else is needed (what? please comment)

I think it is clear from the wiki-entry of self_service that a branch with an atm (where you can withdraw cash) is at least self_service=partially, and therefore also =yes. A branch that isn’t staffed would be self_service=only.

ATM lobbies that were popular in the 1990s seem very rare now.

Some of the local bank branches are set up so that there are normally only 1-2 cashiers, but there are 3-8 ATMs, several of which allow you to lodge cash. There may be a human to provide assistance. Sometimes, there is a machine where you can print statements, but these machines are being phased out. There is then a seated area (not quite a booth) where you can directly contact their call centre on a direct line for free. However, when the staff leave, I suspect all the doors are locked and you can only use the outdoor ATMs.

In some locations, especially ports and airports, ATMs can dispense different currencies. However, it is still an ATM.

I’m not sure that an ATM with cash deposit ability can meaningly be described as a ‘bank’. There would need to be at least some additional services.

In Austria there definitely are many (most of them) banks which have self service lobbies open 24/7.

Self services hosted there are cash out (banknotes, sometimes even coins), cash in (banknotes, sometimes even coins), wire transfers, bank statement machine, machine to change bankcard pin code, …

If you want/need someone to talk to, it gets difficult as bank opening hours have been cut down dramatically to few hours per day.

indoor ATMs accessible when bank is closed are popular in my area, but I would consider it as 24/7 indoor ATM, not as self-service bank

also when you can get cash in both directions and some other automatable services

still, I will not be able there to say come with death certificate and notarized transfer of account to handle transfer of account of deceased family member

I think its ok to not be able to do all possible tasks and still tag self_service=yes.

If many people go in and out of a shop/amenity, doing the tasks usually done there, at machines without any staff present, I call this self service.

I believe since ATM already implies self_service=yes, you might argue it’s redundant to tag it. It would be more important to tag self_service=no or self_service=only if applicable.

To clarify: I’m not holding a different interpretation yet. I’m guessing on possible interpretations. I don’t use that.
There are several situations
A. “Self-service” “machines” even “counters” in branches. You can indeed argue as atm , but my question in wiki was whether dedicated cash or cheque deposit machines with no withdrawal capability are =atm (while there would certainly be proper =atm next to them, making it always atm=yes )
B. Partially “cashless” branches, counters don’t handle cash and cheque, or at least staff helping you use the machine doesn’t touch them. atm=only is wrong, as there are staff providing other services. It does need to use some self_service= , or extend cash_in= to =bank eg cash_in=atm / cash_in=self_service / cash_in:self_service=only / cash_in:atm=only ?
C. I assumed fully cashless ones are office= , but eg there are 4 name=Barclays Local with all being amenity=bank , so at least some user had the thought, while it is wrong to me
D. Staff-assisted “self-service”, with no fixed counters, but there are free-roaming staff to help
E. Unstaffed “self-service” with =atm only. My question was on what’s the feature for an area of multiple machines in general. Cf shop=laundry requiring laundry_service= for staff-served. And possibly amenity=fuel ?
F. Maybe there are ones with remote staff service?

Would a self-service bank be a store with only ATM’s inside? Something like this:

I wouldn’t consider something like that a bank, currently it’s mapped as 11 ATM’s (every machine separate). But I could imagine in OSM there should be one node to mark the whole building as something, where amenity=bank is most close definition.

I think that most people would expect anything tagged as an ATM must allow withdrawal. If it doesn’t allow withdrawals, it needs to be tagged (not sub-tagged) as something else.

I do agree. And apparently cash_out=no is documented as a possibility on amenity=atm now. That needs to be changed too. Tag:amenity=atm - OpenStreetMap Wiki
Furthermore, cash_out= suggests =atm for =no Key:cash_out - OpenStreetMap Wiki
node["cash_out"="no"][amenity!=atm];

  • 33 amenity=payment_terminal : Best solution overall and currently
  • 3 amenity=bank : Needs to be discussed too
    • 1 self_service=only : Notably for this post
    • 1 atm=no : The office= candidate I discussed for case C above
