Does OSM have a way to render the various shields for U.S. highways (interstate vs us for example: I5 vs US 101)? I have found a couple interstates near me that don’t show the shield I would expect. Without the shields the routes might as well be invisible.
So question 1: what does one do to make the shields render?
question 2: if the shields aren’t currently being rendered for U.S. interstates / US highways … how does one go about getting them added into OSM?
Thanks.
You are correct that none of the maps currently on the osm.org homepage render US highway shields. However, the information to do so (usually via road route relations) is typically already mapped in OSM with very good coverage in the US, it just takes some detailed processing that none of those projects have taken on. Luckily, there are many map rendering projects besides those on the homepage that take advantage of different facets of OSM data. You might especially be interested in OSM Americana, which renders a wide variety of highway shields in the US and beyond:
If you notice any shields missing, feel free to raise an issue on the project’s GitHub page, as worldwide detailed shield coverage is a major goal of the project.

Thank you for the link. I’ll check out the highways there and see how they look.
OK… I’ve checked out the area I was most concerned with and it renders correctly.
